Dudes! Help a fellow TL'er
Should I trade it or keep the '04 and keep after dealer and/or ACS to address some issues?
I have an '04 WDP/parchement 5AT/Navi w/21k miles. Was dealer demo when purchased. Had 2900 miles. I've had all scheduled maintenance done through dealer. I really like the car...a lot of power, smooth ride for the most part, good gas mileage, and ya gotta love the ELS and navi! However, there are some issues that are troublesome:
1) Since purchase have had "intermittent" vibe in the steering wheel, gas pedal, and seat that is not related to the tires. (Replaced with Falken 512's/Roadforce balanced). Now is becoming constant.
2) At times, car feels as if it's wandering all over the road and extra effort is needed to keep it on course, while at other times, it handles very well.
3) Randomly, when shifting from drive to park, I can hear and FEEL a "clunk" as I move the selector through the shift gates, passing through the reverse gear.
4) Randomly, when accelerating, the RPMs jump to 4000, down to 2000s, and finally settle 1500-1800 once cruising. This just started about 1 mo. ago.
5) Parchment leather on driver seat showing excessive wear. Leather in lumbar support area is wearing and appears "melted" just like the driver seat bottom that was replaced 3 months ago for same reason.
6) Navi and HFL has locked up 3 times in past 2 weeks, resolved by turning car off and restarting.
With the exception of #6, all issues have been addressed by the dealer. They replaced the driver seat cover (bottom) and made attempts to resolve the other issues...w/o resolution. They advise "normal" or "can't detect/reproduce".
As I said...I REALLY like the TL when it behaves and drives like a TL. My thought is that since it's an '04, there are some issues during the first year of the redesign that would have been worked out for '05. I test drove an '05 that drives and handles completely different than my '04...no vibe, accelerates smoother, shifts smoother, handles better, better leather, etc.
THE DEAL:
I offered dealer 31,800 for '05 ABP/Camel 5AT w/Navi and he will give me 26,500 for my '04, which gives me a pretty decent trade allowance after I determined my payoff. After crunching the numbers my monthly payment would go up $16.00 and I'd pay $850 more over the term of the finance.
Whaddya think?

It's not a terrible idea to trade it in... just don't go to the same dealer, since they know they sold you a demo at a discounted price so their offer may be lower than others'.
Also, I'd most definitely trade for an 06, not an 05. You can probably get a decent deal if you order one.

26500 is about right... that car is considered 2 years old now. In fact that is probably high... If someone goes to buy an 04 right now what do you think they are going to get for a deal 30k. They are insane to be paying that amount of cake for an 04...

I concur,
The Kelly Blue Book private party sale price for your TL is ~$28,000.
(I tend to give more weight to KBB's private party est than trade-in est)
--From experience I know dealerships tend to offer you ~ 20% less than private party price for any given car (That may not be how they compute it but the numbers tend to fall in that % range :-))
So, $26,500 is actually pretty darn good for a trade-in deal. I would also state that that deal is due largely to you're negotiation on a 2005 (end of year) vs 2006.
So, if your numbers are right ($16 more a month/only $850 more over the life of loan) and you are disappointed in your 04TL, I would go for it.
Does FL have a sales tax?? I can't remember... :-(.. If so, trading in results in you only paying sales tax on the remaining $5300 (31,800-26,500). A savings of over $2000 if FL has an ~8% tax like TX Given your numbers you may have already factored that in. Either way, that $2000 trade-in savings can be looked at/added to your trade in price (26,500+2000=28,500), once again making it an OK deal in my book.
Best of luck
