Door molding removal (yes/no?)

OK, Im looking at buying a 06 wdp w/nav. The dealer said he recently had side moldings on the doors installed.

How hard is it to remove the moldings? Should I just keep them on? Should I just ask the dealer to remove them as a stipulation of buying the car?

Is it just me or does the TL's look cleaner without them?

Thanks for any input!

My opinion is to get rid of them.
Have the dealer remove them, but it can be done with a hair dryer to get them loose and pull off with the aid of dental floss, then use 3M general adhesive cleaner to finish the job.

do you park near other cars- the kind who dont care if they fling their door open to get their wide butt out of the car?

How good does the TL look with parking lot rash?

Nizzo, definitely take them off. Your first intuition is correct.

Yeah my wife always complained because I always park far away in grocery parking lots. If by any chance I had to park next to another car, I made sure that it was only another nice vehicle and not a beater, so I dont think the moldings will be needed. Im just gonna ask the dealer to take them off.

have them removed and tell them to knock another 100 dollars off the price of the car.

If you live in the city like i do , u want to keep them on. Lots of cars in the city and littel parking spaces. People ,mostly kids will swing the door open to get out the car and its ding-arama ! I think it makes the car look sportier and the lines go with the car . So what do you rather, have the molding or the dings? I have a wpd and and it not only looks good but protects the car too. Body shops are not cheap!

Just take them off with dental floss, and clean up the adhesive with goo gone.

Nizzo, welcome to AZ I also like to park way out away from everyone. A tip for you is to drop the wife off at the front of the store first. Shows your a gentleman too......

Take them off. I had them on my car for the first four years and was hesitant to take them off. But once I did it made a big difference. And in terms of protecting against dings, remember that the other vehicle's door would need to align up with the molding to prevent the ding. In most cases most of us are dropped or the offending vehicle (at least in my case...or if you talking about kids) is a soccer mom SUV. So you'd be dinged anyway. You're better off picking your parking spots wisely. If you're wife doesn't like you parking far, just do what LoveMyTL-S suggested and drop her off in the front. If she's your wife she should at least understand your new obsession (trust me...it will be).

couldn't agree more with this statement

Door moldings are easy to remove, door dings/scratches are not.

I would say remove it, your car would look so much cleaner without it.

I doubt it would be hard to remove.

Wow you guys really like doing more work than you need to. Dental floss? hair dryer? lol geeez.
When I bought my 07 Type S I literally grabbed the end with my finger nail and peeled it right back. Almost ALL of the double sided tape stayed right on the rubber strip. Easiest thing to do ever just yank it right off. Then when your done clean the surface with whatever you want then wax it.

yeah but keep in mind the longer its been on there, the harder the adhesive will be on there

if they were put in late 06 since your vehicle is an 07 and you removed them in 07 thats a few months

his is an 06... which means it was late 05, so thats almost 4 years of it being on there

Yeah I know what you mean. BTW though I bought my 07 Type S three months ago so it would have been on there for I guess atleast 2 years and it peeled right off perfectly.
Either way take it off though it looks soooo nice without it.

Told the dealer to take them off and he said he would ask the service department. He then called me back and said they will not remove them because if it peels the paint off or shows faded paint they do not want to have to pay a body shop to fix it.

I got pissed and chewed them out for being dumb @55es about it. After some back and forth conversation I then proceeded to tell them to drop the price of the car, in which he said "no" and I then asked if he was willing to lose the sale of the TL over removing moldings and he got pissed because we had an agreed price on the car With the moldings on it.

Im sick of looking for a WDP with black interior and nav at a good price so Im just gonna take it with moldings. If you want something done right I guess you might as well do it yourself.

I did call a local body shop on a price to remove them since I value my time off from work and they said 75.00 to remove/sand/buff/polish if needed.

Im just gonna remove one molding and if it doesnt go good then I will just pay the shop to do the rest.

BTW,I pick up the TL tomorrow from the dealer!!!!!!!!!!

They told me 320.00 for the front A-spec under spoiler installed, but unfortunately they could not get one before my scheduled pickup date.

I think they were lying when they said that the spoiler and molding was just installed. They were probably using it as a bargaining tool since I kept negotiating on a low price.

I specifically asked the GM to give me the install date on the moldings and he couldnt give me one. They were probably factory installed.

Who the hell would put side moldings on a car and use it as a selling point? To me it would be pointless...
