DIY: '07-'08 3G TL HID Fog Lights on factory switch.

Hello everyone. I wanted to make a DIY tutorial, as I had some free time this weekend, and there was no DIY for people who wanted to install HID's fog lights with their stock/factory switch.

**Note: you should reference sandiegodrive's videos on how to remove your front bumper here <-----.

This can be done with one person.

Please let me know if I missed anything here or you if you need any help.

Without further ado:

Things you will need.

1. Flathead screwdriver.
2. Phillips screwdriver.
3. 10mm socket.
4. Combination wrench set
4. Electrical tape.
5. Zip ties (and/or 3M tape, I did not use it).
6. Pocket/safety knife.
7. Your HID kit consisting of: 2 x H8 HID bulbs, 2 x ballasts, 1 relay harness with fuse.
OPTIONAL (It made my life easier):
8. Jack
9. Jack stands
10. Chock blocks (just to be safe!)

Pictures of tools:

Ok, lets get started:

1. Go ahead and jack the car up, and place it on the jack stands (this will make your life easier, trust me). Refer to your owner's manual for where to jack your car up and place the jack stands.

2. Remove your bumper, according to the post above (thanks Sandie!) and set aside. Be careful not to drop your bumper and damage it! Please note that you will need to disconnect your current fog lights before the bumper is completely free.

3. Run your relay harness in a reasonable fashion (don't place it next to things that get hot or condensate easily). I ran mine behind the body, in front of the radiator, zip tied to the support structures, away from harm. Make sure to run the wires all the way to the battery, and set aside to connect for later.

4. Mount your ballasts in a safe, secure location, also away from harmful environments. I mounted mine to support beams (see pictures below, look for zip ties). Make sure to zip tie the wires of the harness down, once you have run them.

5. Connect your relay harness to your ballasts, and your ballast to your factory 9006 connector (note, you will need the +/- to 9006 female connector attached to your HID bulb, for our fog lights). Use electrical tape to secure the connections together, and tuck them away safely.

6. Remove your old fog lights from the housing and plug in your new HID bulbs (do not touch either bulb with your fingers. If you do, use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to clean it off). Remember: righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.

7. Remove negative battery terminal and connect your relay harness's positive and negative connections to your battery terminals, disconnecting your negative terminal first, and connecting it back up last.

8. Reconnect battery to your car and give it a test run, to make sure all is working correctly.

9. Put bumper back on (reverse Sandie's method), making sure to tighten all bolts adequately.

10. Remove car from jack stands, put tools away, and enjoy your work!

3G Garage worthy!! Good work! Although I heard it's possible to do this without taking the bumper off I'm sure this allows you more room to work.

Yea, you don't have to take the bumper off, its just harder to do it that way, imo. The bumper is realllllly easy to take off too, surprisingly.

Cool DIY!

Altho, i suggest lowering the car back down after you have the bumper off. When i was installing mine, one of my bulbs ripped out of the socket and busted because when i was putting the bumper back on one side of the bumper dropped. The wires are very short, but then again i guess it might depend on what brand you get

edit: My ballasts are located higher than yours (directly underneath the headlight housings)

Yep, everything works like if the factory bulbs were being used (the switch on the turn signal still works), works the same way. Just with HIDS :-D

Can you turn your fog lights on without your headlights being on?

Fogs and parking lights only on
Fogs on with every other light turned off

or does this work just like the factory fogs... Fogs can only turn on when headlights are turned on and fogs turn off when high-beams are activated?

Very nice diy? Can you post where you got everything? Is output still bright with the yellow overlay? I also have yellow overlay on my cbp type s, they look like twins, lol.

Works just like the factory lights, as it runs off all the stock switches the same.

I bought my jack and jack stands from Harbor Freight. My tools from Lowes/Home Depot. and my H8 3000k 35w HID kit from DDMTuning.com Beware, it took them 2.5 weeks to ship these babies to me (they neglected to mention their warehouse was in China). If you're up for the wait, then everything is great!

p.s.- the light output is still very bright. The yellow is definitely noticeable. You can see the yellow output much better on objects than looking directly at them, I'll say that.

so what's the point of jacking the car up?

and what do you mean there was no DIY for people who wanted to install HID's fog lights with their stock/factory switch? all you did was install HID fog lights/relay harness.

i'm confused. nice write up tho.

There was one for an HID fog light setup with an independent switch, but I didn't see one for just an HID kit on stock switch.

I'm a fairly big guy (6'3" 230lb.), so its hard for me to get under the car without lifting it. Plus, removing the bumper reallllllly opens things up for mounting the ballasts.

I wanted to contribute a little something, so don't be hatin'! Lol

It was more or less just to help out beginners (much like myself) with doing basic things like this. I'll refrain from posting things like this (as I have done for the past 4 years) in the future.

I'm about 2 posts away from just disabling my account altogether and abandoning this site to go solo. I never seem to be appreciated, rather just an innocent bystander to hatred and negativity, and honestly, its getting old, and I can find better things to do.
