What is the break-in period of my Acura?
Help assure your vehicle's future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you drive during the first 600 miles (1,000 kilometers). During this period:
Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration.
Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken in by moderate use for the first 200 miles (300 km). --->http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Mainten...qs.asp#breakin

VTEC is Different
My 1990 Maxima with 160HP "felt" faster around town driving. It's because the power band was much lower and it had gobs of torque low down in the RPM range. It was snappy and sassy.
The TL has a 110 more HP but it comes on higher in the RPM band. You don't even really feel the high power until about 5,000 RPM and up. Then, the VTECH kicks in like a supercharger.
Once you get used to it, you won't be dissappointed. The new Maxima is a snarling, scary monster of torque by comparison, but, all other things being equal, the TL will beat it.
I've had both.

Not so fast, partner.
My 04 TL has about 1600 miles and I think its a slug off the line......and don't even try to accelerate from 25 mph because all you'll do is suck up copious amounts of gas but go nowhere. My 225hp CL ate a neighbors 04's lunch to 60 when we quit accelerating, mostly out of embarassment for the 04 because I have one too.
I like the car for what it is, a road touring car with comfort, but a racer it's not.

The TL is no sissy. It will hold it's own. It will take on anything in it's class and then some. You just have to get comfortable driving it. Getting the most out of the car doesnt just involve putting the pedal to the medal. You have to know how to drive these things. And yes, the car does feel faster as it brakes in. In fact, my experience is that cars are the fastest (is that a word? ) when they are fully broken in at 30k miles. Any other thoughts.

I have heard this discussed on many boards. My S2000 ran MUCH better at 12k miles (when I got rid of it) than it did for the first 8000 miles. My wifes 04' AT TL has 13k on it, and it seemed to start running better around the 6k mark. My 04 MT TL only has 300 miles on it, but already seems to run better (still can't push it), and is already getting better mileage.
Of course her car is an early VIN (16xx) and I have a late VIN (707xx).

My 01 CL-S ran much faster at 50K miles. Then again, this was when I knew I was getting rid of it for the O4 TL and thus was pretty much flooring it where ever I went.
One thing I did notice is that when I drove a 04 TL with 18" rims ( it was loaner from dealership while they put my spoiler on my TL), it would not spin its tires, even with the VSA turned off. My TL only has 500 miles on it, so I don't know how well it spins its tires. My 01 CL-S would spin the tires for a full 2 seconds when I turned the VSA off. In fact, on some occasions, I could get the tires to smoke.

I posted a thread on this before and we agreed that these 04 TL's get faster as they get broken in. The thing is that these engines are sooo smooth that you dont realize how fast your going till you look at the speedo.

This car is the fastest car I've ever owned. Coming out of a Plymouth Breeze, this is an F-16! I don't know how you can refer to this as slow even if you HAVE owned an S2000 or anyother sports car.......
This car is great! I can't think of anything that combines practicality, features, value, power, performance, and luxury at even $40k!

Compared to other cars in its class the TL is slow out of the hole and really needs to be kept in the upper rev range to show any real grunt. You almost need to drive it like a turbo with a lag problem and this type of driving just isn't practical in day to day driving.
We need to accept the car for what it is. If you go around doing street racing you have to expect to get beat.......a lot! If you do highway running where you can run the revs out you'll win a lot more often. It's a great car with no low end torque.

The TL is meant to drive...not race! If you want to race....get a Viper or something more suited for what you want to do with the car. Acura never intended this car to be a street racer...if they did, they would have not added power hungry weight adding accessories like power windows, power mirrors, navi, power seats.....we've got a great sport sedan meant to be driven on the highway, and not raced at a drag strip. Accept the car for what it is!!
