De-Badging

I'm (obviously) new to your forums ... just got an '07 TL (N.Nav.-R. Blue Pearl) and have a question on de-badging.
Right now , I only want to take off the "unsightly" dealer name that
seems to be some sort of vinlyl letter applique. When you start pulling one
of the letters off , there it's leaving a sticky residue. Is bug and tar the best
thing to remove this with? And when it comes to the badges themselves , what is the proper removal technique ? Seems like alcohol would work without damaging
the Clear Coat. Thanks for the help...your forums are great.

I debadged after blow drying the emblems for about 10 minutes. You can use floss to help get behind the badging.

bug and tar can work, goo-be-gone, etc. Just use some wax over the badging area after you've removed the badges to protect the area.

Yes, alcohol will work to remove the adhesive.
As PeterUbers wrote, make sure you wax over the area that had the adhesive too, regardless of what you use to remove the adhesive!

I would have told the dealer when I took delivery that they either remove the badge themselves or knock $50 off the price of the car, because I'm not going to advertise their dealership on my car for free!

just use dental floss I heard that works and it won't mess up the paint cause it's waxed! so your all good

....as if the humongous license plate frames (with the dealer name) weren't

Seriously, next time you buy a new car, just ask the dealer to not include a dealer decal. It's no big deal, they do it all the time.

Last 3 cars we've bought, none had the decal. Told the license plate bracket was fine just to make 'em feel good (then took those off as soon as we got home). No hassels, no fuss.

I took all my emblems off one morning with heavy dew. I used 8# fishing line and they came right off in a couple minutes. I rubbed the glue for another 2-3 minutes and all done. I read about using fishing line, doesn't break like floss. I did everything in about 5-6 minutes with nothing but fishing line, my wet fingers from the morning dew. FUNNY how easy it was!

The dealer decals came off with no problem , and what little residue was left was easily removed with a little Goo Gone , as suggested.

I'm going to debadge my car this weekend... This might be a stupid question but i'm thinking about just removing "Acura" and leaving TL S Type for the time being. Any Suggestions, or should I just remove it all?

The "totally de-badged" look is nice and clean , but personally I kinda'
like the little "chromey" Acura and Tl emblems.
They're small...unobtrusive (my opinion)...I'm keeping 'em. :tongue:

I took everything off except the "A" because of holes under it. I then put just the Type S back on. Its on the lower right side. Looks good :thumbsup:

as for debadging..using blow dryer is the best method..

What adhesive glue did you use to reapply the type-S emblem? I'm thinking about putting the 'S' back on...

Fieryone, I'm actually living up in Jersey. I go to my parents place about every two weeks (I actually was just down this weekend)

Bought my car from Precision Acura in princeton. I went into Hall before I bought my car and they didn't have the black TL-S on the lot so they said they would do a locate for me. Two weeks later they still didn't call, boy did their faces light up when I went back there with the car. I guess they didn't think a 24 year old was serious about buying a 40k car. I hate how some people judge you on your age, oh well, Precision was happy to do business with me.

That depends on the situation. MY BEST method was exactly how I did it. I went outside one early morning, the morning dew on the car was heavy, like a lubricant. I took 8 pound fishing line, got all the emblems off in 3 minutes, then got all the glue off using my finger, the morning dew and all DONE in 5 minutes total.

OH I much prefer the Emblem where it is. Its in the same place ALL people put the A-Spec emblem. Perfect Spot IMO :thumbsup:

I bought 3M-3/4" 2 sided emblem/door edge tape. Its made for this. Great :thumbsup: I bought it at Autozone.

I'm thinking about debadging my car. Would it be a problem that the badges have been on my car for three years? would it be harder to take off? I really want to take them off, but i'm scared of messing up the paint.

On a hotass day or take a blow dryer until the adhesive melts a little then use fishing line to floss if off. Next....for the left over ahesive, I just took a paper towel, pressed down hard on the adhesive and push away in one direction like you're creasing a paper over and over again until all the adhesive is stuck on the paper towel (it's easier to rub if you blow dry it again after flossing)

mine was on for 2 years..i did it when it was raining outside and then took the car into the garage to debadge..everything was clean and neat

two sided tape....hmmm....is that water proof as well along with strong bondage like the original adhesive that was on the car before?

The 3M tape I bought is 2 sided made for side trim and emblems, you don't want to use glue. I work in the printing industry and with all kinds of tapes and adhesives. The 3M tape is the best.

YES its water proof, its made for emblems, and works great :thumbsup:

If you REALLY want your re-attached emblems to be permanent, you can use 2-part 3M 2216 ScotchWeld adhesive. It's aerospace grade; they use it to glue together parts on the space shuttle. $30 for 2 oz. available at your nearest spaceship supply store. The only thing is that once it's on, it will NEVER, EVER, EVER come off, which could be good or bad :thumbsup: just giving you options ;)

I got a black chrome rear emblem, so I wanna swap with the present one. How do I get that "A" off, and is it difficult to put the new one on? I thought I read somewhere before that was trouble. Remember, I'm swapping, so the "2 hole" issue is a non-issue for me. I guess I just need a DIY on how to swap them. Anybody?
