Confidence for those who never done an oil change- START NOW

Fellas- My B1 notification came on this past week, and I am at 23,300 and right on schedule for an oil change as well. Well, after contacting the dealer, and getting a quote for 150-175 bucks, I decided to put this site, and the DIY to the test, to a "maintenance beginner".
So, I went to Autozone and bought the Mobile 1 synthetic, with the M1-110 filter, and saved 17 bucks, 39.00 total. Bought a nice $7 drain pain, and was ready to go. So, I set the computer in the garage, and followed the step by step DIY and it was as smooth as MJ in the air- yes i did just say that
I cant wait to do it again, and will do it on my 96 Accord EX (that still looks like it came off the showroom) next week. Much thanks to this site, and there is NO reason why any "car enthusiast" cant change his own oil-
Yes, I did also rotate the tires, and "check brake lines, clean brakes, and checked pads, which i have plenty left"- So if you are unsure about this procedure, especially the oil change...it is simple.

thanks,

J.O.

Congratulations!

It's always the best way to have peace-of-mind by DIYing.

I'm glad you had a good experience and didn't get discouraged!

OMG! She's caught the BUG!!
Congrats, JO.
Be careful on that Accord though. My GF has an 06 and we did hers before mine. Believe me, the oil filter is a PITA on the 4 cylinders (and I tried using the freezer bag trick). I saw an ad on handaworld.com for an Accord drain funnel (for lack of a better term) that has a magnet on one side. You attach it to the oil pan under the filter and it catches the runoff and puts it right in the drain pan. $15 and well worth it in my opinion. I'm gonna make her get one before the next 5000 miles!
Post pics of those A-Specs when you have them installed!

+2 on the Accord oil change info....

i have a '95 accord that i drive as a beater and to haul my dog around in now that I've got my TL... now that I am doing all my own work on the TL, i figured I'd try the DIY oil change on the Honda... definitely not worth it... the filter is in an awkward position and I ended up getting oil alllll over the place. Next time she needs new oil, I will just pony up and have it done... that is if I havent gotten rid of her!

Thats a really high price (even for a dealer). I would stay away from that dealer - they is something not right going on there.

For some reason when I approach my TL to do any work whether its change oil or change wipers I get so nervous and intimidated by it. Maybe im afraid of putting a scratch or something.

but, when I work on the Audi, im balls deep in confidence even if i mess something up. Despite the Audi being harder to work on I need to break the ice on working on the TL. lol

Funny you say that because I was iffy about me changing my own oil, always thinking I will fuck something up. So the first thing I did was change out my suspension (I had some help though). Then I told myself, if I can do this I can change my own oil hahaha

On the side note, When i changed my oil I didn't reset my SERVICE REMINDER thing. How do i do that again?

Oh no.. We created a monster.. lol.. JO is going to go around offering his oil services now.. lol.. j.k.

Glad you had a good experience. Sounds like you got jipped on that M1.. every month one auto parts store or another has a 25.99 or 28.99 deal.. try Royal P on your next oil change. If you bought standard M1 I would only go 5-6k miles on it.. If you bought M1-EP you're good to 10k, maybe more but I assume you drive somewhat spirited as most of us do.

What's next? ATF? BF? Coolant?..

Damn you did the suspension before the oil change lol kinda backwards . But your right, once you get into it you'll do everything on this car. It's like one big jigsaw puzzle!

Flyromeo3 - yeah you gotta break the ice lol if your working on an Audi, the TL should be cake. I bet it's much easier to pull apart/put back together and more "convenient" to work on then the Audi.

LOL'd- and i will be sure to check next time on the RP, hmm....next...since i am 23,500 now, i believe it will be the 30K Service- I will do alot of research, but it should be : Oil / Filter / Washer change ; Tranny Flush; Inspect Radiator; Clean Brakes; and some investigating on replace front differential fluid, replace in cabin pollen filter, and lubricate brake caliper slides thanks guys

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON

2. Press the < or > button repeatedly until the oil life is displayed.

3. Press and hold the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds. The Multi-Information Display will ask for a confirmation.
If you are sure you want to reset the display, press the Select/Reset button to select “OK”
If you do not want to reset the display, press the < or > button to select “Cancel”
That worked for me, may take a few times...but the oil now says 100% and the B1 minder is not coming up anymore !

the directions are posted in the Garage section, as well as the link for free downloadable copies of the acura owner book for more info if your car didnt come with one
Lots of info on brake and traction system controls and brains

Check things!! -dont just change the oil and call it done
Rubber boots are critical to remain sealed- check suspension and steering
Peek at the brakes thru the caliper hole
refill washer fluid

It's in the owner's manual. In the earlier 3G's, the final step was missing from the instructions.
