Is the color a bit off on the rear bumper of this ASM TL-S?
Was looking at this used TL-S and noticed the rear bumper color was a bit off from the body. This isn't normal, correct?
I figure it may just be that it's plastic so it could be off. Tried looking at pics of other ASM, but can't really tell. Hoping an ASM owner could tell me.
TIA!

Most likely the front and rear bumpers are both off color to a certain degree. Honda has problems paint matching certain colors, it's very common. Keep in mind colors like silver, heavy metallics will flop at different angles. That combined with the plastic bumper panel not being perfectly flush/even with the adjacent body panel will give an off color appearance. That can make the bumper mismatch look worse/better at different angles.

nothing to do with honda really.. alot of cars are like this.. however my wdp matches pretty damn well..
Silver IS the hardest color to match.. while most cars have a bit of a difference between shades on the bumpers.. that is a little much on the pix but its a toss up as to if it was repainted or not..
paint has several variations even with the same paint code.. temperature it was painted.. air pressure in the gun etc.. paint shows up different on plastic as it does to metal also.
also i believe even at the factory the bumpers are painted at a different time as the car itself. Its really a toss up in the end the best way to tell would look for any orange peel/overspray/ or masking marks that it may have been repainted

the bumper has a flex addititive, thus it is slightly off... I think that the tls pictured appears more off because of the picture, in person I know it wont be as obvious

To make matters worse, cameras capture the color difference to a greater extreme, especially if the flash goes off.
It has to do with the way light reflects off the painted plastic vs the painted metal, they have different 'grains'

I got rear-ended (hit & run) yesterday, motherf*ckers. I went to my friend who own a body shop... I asked him if there is a color mismatch, and he said most cars these days have this awful mistmach....he said benz is the worst where the bumpers and body are different shades...
On my WDP the bumper is darker than the body...
PS If you live in NYC, and you see 1999 or so golden honda accord with plate starting AZN...let me know... I'm gonna make him dig 6 feet deep.

Its more a Honda / Acura issue than an all cars with plastic bumper issue... I have had a lot of cars and detail a lot of cars with plastic bumpers and the majority of them match.
I think the problem is is the bumpers aren't painted in the same factory from the same paint batch. In other words the bumpers are painted somewhere else and married to the car later.

Thanks all for the replies! I've actually seen the car in person and was about to purchase but then I noticed the bumper being mismatched, and thought that it was rear ended before (Clean Carfax). What you see in the pics above is exactly how it looks in person. Hmmmm....

An easy way to check the rear bumper for paint work is to pop the trunk, check for a vin tag on the bumper edge, in the jam. There should be one, if not its been removed for paint work, or its an after-market or re-maned/repainted used bumper. If its there, check to see if there is a tape line around it, indicating it's been masked for paint work. If not it should be OE paint, at least on that part of the bumper.
It is a known Honda problem. Their flex additive excuse is fishy, I've never seen flex additive effect the color to that degree. If it's purely an additive problem, they must be using some lower quality, cheap materials, or just not using it correctly. Some of the mis matches are way off, not only on bumper, I've seen some gas doors, rear hatches that have been way off as well. If the panel color match isn't perfect, it should be "acceptable", Honda's opinion of acceptable is overly forgiving sometimes.

Common on the TL, I had 2 different 08 Type-S in ASM and both the back bumper is obviously differnt shade from almost every angle. I hear the White was way worse, but later built #G TL's have been better. Don;t look too close at the body paint work either, Honda paint is probaly the worst I have dealt with over the years, I find a few imprefectiosn in each of the 5 TL's I have had, must be those yahoos in Ohio, I'll take a Japan built car any day. I was thinking of going to a G35 this year and looked over a few of them and never saw the level of paint issues on Infiniti that I do on the TL. I find crap in the paint in several places on my TL's.

Driven to Perfection
My SSM TSX was exactly the same way after I got a new bumper put on at the body shop. I pointed it out when they gave it back to me, and the guy said it was normal. Of course it was a replacement bumper... but the original could have been the same way, I just never noticed because I didn't look at it critically, the way I did after my crash.
During my last service visit with it, I asked the service manager if anything looked "wrong" with the car. He said no, I had to point out the color difference. He told me it was common, especially after body work.
