Classic Rear Deck rattle.

So I bring my car to the Acura dealership near me to take care of the rattle in the back deck of my car (mainly because its still under warranty, so why should I bother messing with things). So I dropped it off this morning, and they say that they couldn't hear it with the radio on (but failed to try any other sort of input/turn the bass all the way up even though I have it in the middle), and only when driving on bumpy roads. They determined the cause to be the subwoofer moving up and down, and that it is normal and happens to every car. I called BS. He didn't seem like he wanted to help me out much to fix it under warranty because he was convinced that it would be rattling no matter what they did. So I finally convinced him to replace all the sound insulation in the back deck. Hopefully that does the trick.

If anyone else had an experience like mine where the dealer thought it was normal, how did you handle it? Thanks.

Ha! They told me it was because it was a pair of safety glasses I had in my rear seat, it wasn't but haven't bothered to bitch about it and take it back yet, I'll wait till it gets a little worse

mine did that like crazy! it would rattle so bad.. so i took it to the dealer, they had added some foam around sub and the panel above it.. still rattled. I took it all apart myself, added the dynomat all over exposed metal.. than by pounding with my fist around the deck i have discovered that the rattling sound was coming from the center seat belt mechanism... well that brought me to an dead end since i do not want to take the seat belt off... put it all back together, still get that little rattle noise

I took my car to two different dealerships. The first kept saying that i put my bass up to high and that is causing it to rattle and they also said they couldn't hear the rattle with the radio on. Radio doesn't have that much bass to begin with. After a few more visits i learned that they weren't even doing the work and didn't care, so i switched dealerships. Took it the second one. On the first visit they also played the radio and a few songs off my cds in the car and yet no rattle. I said to myself....that's not possible!!.. i took it back again and played this song right in front of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zllH3ZMzSwU and they confirmed it was rattling.. few hrs later everything was perfect...try finding a song ( or use this song above ) where you can prove it right that second that it rattles.. have the service rep come out and sit inside the car with you..

@RainSupreme Yeah, I was pretty annoyed with them thinking it was normal. Even worse them thinking its a stupid pair of glasses. It's like they're not even trying.

As I looked at the TSB's for this problem as the years went on, they added more and more stuff to prevent it. There were only 2 steps for 2008's for dealers to fix by the books, instead of like 5 or 6.

@rhafikjaan The funny thing was, the days up until my scheduled service date (today) I made note of songs that made it rattle noticeably. Most of these songs were by 50 Cent lol I was expecting a tech, or the service manager to come sit in the car to listen for it, but they never did. After they install the new insulation, I will be sure to test those songs before I leave the lot, gd rattle better be gone...and if it comes back it better be before March when my warranty is up lol

Link is broken haha. I know there are plenty of DIYers for fixing this rattle or rattles in this area, but like i said before I'd rather have it fixed by the dealership since it is still under factory warranty for a while.

Next week, I will be taking my TL in for the 3rd time regarding this issue. Last 2 previous times, they both replaced the whole rear shelf. They told me they also put some padding underneath. It would sound good for about a month and the rattle would keep coming back.

Took mine to the dealer under warranty...the replaced all the rear seat belt mechanics-isms and clips, as well as sound deadened the entire deck. Fairly happy with it so far.

Hope to hell that this doesn't happen to me. I'm like OCD when it comes to rattles, if i hear the slightest sound, i want it gone. Imagine how crazy i was driving my 93 Ford Probe lol, luckily with the windows down it was fun to drive.

UPDATE:

Just came back from my dealer. They are going to be replacing it AGAIN, for the 3rd time. They said heat can cause the shelf to become warped. So this would be the 3rd one since May of last year.

Although my warranty is over, the dealer gives me a year warranty on the part starting from the day they put it in so I guess I will keep bringing it in since I don't have to pay a cent.

Awesome that they're at least trying to make it right. The "rear shelf sound insulation pad" from the TSB just got into my dealership so I have to bring my car in soon for the install. Hopefully that solves the problem 100%.

I took mine out myself and put some soft foam inbetween the deck and the cover... problem solved... the time I spent doing it was the time bitching at the dealership. =D

i have had my type s for a few years now. the first thing i got fixed was the rear deck rattle. it is the rear deck rattling against the rear window. the dealership put felt pads inbetween the rear deck and my rear window to stop the rattling. things have been good so far.

edit: the rear deck rattles when you have the music playing and the bass is strong. it is the plastic deck rattling against the glass window. at least thats what my problem is. just wanted to be clear with what the problem is (for me)

i guess Elliot Scheiner the designer of the ELS surround system doesnt like bass in his music. ahahahha

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

I'd put it back to stock before bring it in, they said if anything was "messed with" aftermarket-wise it may void the warranty.

Also I don't have a problem fixing things myself, but its my first car with a warranty so I might as well take advantage of it. Car is going in Saturday so I'm pretty happy its getting fixed "professionally," and most importantly, for free.

BSpec, I had the same thing happen with my Type S. The dealership was well aware of the situation, fixed it with a simple fix.....they tightened down the seat belt straps next to the subwoofer. Problem resolved.....

Interesting...well if there is a rattle that ever comes back, I'll be sure to let them know the probable cause haha. I had my dad push on the back deck near the glass while it was rattling and it stopped, so I'm pretty sure that was what was rattling in mine. Thanks for the heads up though.

"TSB 04-043: Rear Shelf Rattles." is the name of the TSB in "The Garage" but it is under the 2004 section. However, it includes different resolutions between years 2004 and 2008.

Edit: I believe it was revised in 2009, so it's not that new.

Back in 06 or 07 the dealership dynamatted the rear deck to lessen the rattles, then I noticed that the LATCH covers would also rattle so I put felt pads with adhesive backing between the cover and the surrounding plastic. Lastly, i stuck some felt pads between the center of the rear deck between the deck and the rear window and also put felt pads between the bottom of the deck and the metal. The deck still has a slight rattle with some songs, but it's mostly gone now.

Same thing here! I had to install FULL Dynamat everywhere, reinstall all rear deck. Rattle is still there!!

Remove everthing again....

Play some music and watch...

Center seat belt RATTLING....couldnt fix it so I removed it.

Reinstall everything again...

No more rattle....

2 weeks later...the right side seat belt is ratlling...OH WELL!!! Just gotta live with some rattle or drop some base......

Thats what I call a TOTAL FAIL!

^There has to be a way to fix the seat belts. I Thought I read in the archives this morning a guy just put a self tapping screw threw it and voila, no belt rattle...

Interesting to see other's solutions. If you look at the TSB, you can see that the later models took into account the other fixes as they are not required in the TSB. Its good to see Acura learning from its mistakes, but even with all that they couldn't totally get rid of the rattling.
