Changing from Miles to KM
#3
some cars such as the Civic and some GM cars have the option to change from MPH to KM. Sadly this is not the case with the TL. The Canadian TL and US TL have different gauge clusters. The only KM you can see in the US TL is the ones written in small font under the MPH.

It's unbelievably stupid, but the MID cannot be switched from miles to kilometres or from degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius. Makes absolutely no sense when you have a digital display because all they needed to do was add the conversion algorithm to the software and wire up a button. If you need to convert temperatures, or convert between gallons and litres at the gas station, use the Navi's calculator (if you have Navi). Otherwise, for distances, you'll just have to look at the speedometer (80 km is around 50 miles, just as 80 km/h is around 50 mph) or do the math in your head (miles x 1.6 or km x 0.6 is close enough a conversion).
The stupidity of this is underscored by the fact that the Navi manual recommends changing the Navi units of measure when you cross the border so that the instructions given match the highway signs. Fair enough, but if you also use your MID's trip meter to confirm to you when you'll see the exit the Navi referenced (e.g., "In one mile take the exit on the right"), switching the Navi to real measurements doesn't help a lot if the MID is still stuck in the 1700s using miles.
At least our speedometers show the km/h scale, even if it's hard to read. My mother and father bought a new Volvo S80 T6 AWD in January 2009 and the speedometer shows only miles per hour. They cannot figure out how to get it to display kilometres per hour should they need that info, as apparently the owner's manual doesn't say anything about it. Seems really stupid to me not to include that.

I have a Can TL and the MPH is nearly impossible to read during the day. The least they could have done is put a button so you could light the inner ring brighter if you wanted.
