Certified Pre-Owned?
Hi All.... Noob here!
I've scanned the TL 3G forum over the last few days, and spotted this recent thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/car-parts-sale-361/selling-k-n-air-filter-stock-airbox-142684/
but was looking for a bit more focus on the following topic, if anyone was interested...?
I'm (highly) considering purchasing a CPO 2005 TL (Auto w/ Nav, black on black, with 21,700 miles) from my local Acura dealer. This is my first experience with a CPO program, as previously I've owned only non-certified used cars. Just curious what TL CPO'ers out there have to say about their experience with warranty issues.... anything to beware of, etc? Maybe it just depends on the service dept?
I'm making the move from a 2001 Audi A4 because the car is a mess, electrically/electronically-speaking. I'll probably take the option to extend the warranty on the TL to the 7 years/100,000 miles, simply because I'm tired of a monthly repair bill being higher than my loan payment.
Also related to Audi.. a tidbit I've learned along the way I'd love to bounce off you guys.... I believe Audi reserves the right to use remanufactured parts on warranty issues, but will use new parts if you come in with a car beyond it's warranty. Is this also true for Acura CPO, or maybe all CPO programs, and I just never knew?
Thanks in advance for your time and input! -scott

you're not the sandman from audiworld are you? I traded in my 98.5 2.8QMS for $3300 last november... so be prepared to grab your ankles. :P
Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question. That probably is best to be answered by your dealership when they try to sell you the extended warranty.
A tip... like the car, the price on the extended warranty is negotiable.
It's nice to see another audiworld member here.

Kennyc: Although I was a very regular reader at Audiworld, I never actually registered... so, I'm not the same Sandman you know from that forum... ironic though! I was there all the time trying to find solutions to the problems I was having with my A4. Incredible resource. I hope this forum will prove to be just as comprehensive. I'll do what I can to contribute, of course!
I'm in a pretty good situation with this TL purchase. My GF is an accountant for the dealership, so my "friends and family" price is the (cost of the car to them)+($250 markup). That number equals about $27,800. The price they are quoting me for the warranty that takes the coverage (no deductable) out to the 7yr/100,000mi is $550. Hard for me to argue that price, when I'm sure SOMETHING will go wrong in 7 years that will amount to more than that.
Still wondering if anyone has discovered any loopholes in the program. It seems suspiciously good. Is there anything in the 150 pt checklist that I should ask about because it's often overlooked or conveniently forgotten? Maybe I'm being too pessimistic?

couple of most common issues people encounters here...
rattles - drive with the windows up, stereo and a/c off and see if you hear any rattles. Some TL rattles a lot and mine being one of them.
pulls - some TL will pull to one side during hard acceleration. Some are caused by bad tires and others caused by alignment out of spec. A good through test drive is neccessary.
I got my 05 TL last Nov (NAVI, 6mt, HPT) for 32,500 (+TTL) with 7 miles on it. Unless your 05 has uber low miles you might want to cosider spending the difference and get a new one. Unlike Audi, TL has really low depreciation so buying new might not be a bad idea.

I bought a CPO '04 6MT TL at the end of 2005 that had come off a lease. Make sure the extended warranty is an Acura warranty - not some bootleg 3rd party provider sold by the dealership. I had one from CarMAX on my previous car and it was fine but friends had plenty of trouble with a different one.
As for warranty work, I think a lot depends on the sevice department - Ed Voyles here in Atlanta was awesome with the one warranty fix I needed so far (the headliner had been reinstalled incorrectly before I got the car, they clipped it back on correctly).

3 months ago-- I purchased a CPO '04 TL with 50k miles. It's been at the dealership already for warranty work (traction control module caused some strange issues) and they did the tow at no cost.
Otherwise I love the car. I couldn't afford a new one so this was the next best thing for me.
Alot of the work really depends on the dealership. Good/reliable dealerships are hard to come by.
