Catalytic converter flange completely cracked, could this hurt engine?

So I posted a few weeks ago how I needed a new cat because the flange from the rear cat was cracked.

I was drinking today and when I accelerated I heard a pop and the exhaust sounded 10 times louder . It sounds like there is nothing attached to the engine... I also noticed a severe decrease in MPG. I'm guessing the car is running very lean. Could this hurt the engine somehow ? I ordered the cat a few days ago.
