still waiting... i thought i ran over something but i dont see anything. i looked under the car but i could not see anything out of the norm. i was thinking the exhaust came loose or something because it looked more like exhaust smoke than fire smoke, and it stopped when i shut off car. i just hope its not related to me inhaling water in the intake a few months ago.

I hope this is not the case but it seems like the same description of when I blew my engine on my Q45. I was going 70 and just started to slightly accelerate to get to left lane speed.

well i am finally warm and at work, but still no updates. the guy at the dealership said it sounds like it is running on two cylinders which is not a good sign. i will keep you all updated when i hear more. this really sucks because i had a compression test done not so long ago and they said everything checked out, but maybe the cold weather pushed the components to their limit.

the weird thing was i was only going like 20-30mph when it happened, so i wasnt even pushing it hard. and it was well warmed up and i had been driving for about 15min when it happened. lets just say i am angry right now. that, and it took over 1.5hrs to get a tow.

verdict is in, i blew a piston or whatever (sorry, i am not very engine smart). anywho, i am abouts to call the insurance company so they can asses what to do. any suggestions are very very welcome.

and to sum it up, i DO have an after market intake, and i DID suck in water a few months ago...i thought this may affect the suggestions coming in. thanks for the support!!!!

imo... i dont think your insurance company is going to cover it BECAUSE of the aftermarket parts, and those parts are not covered under your manufacturers warranty... but hey u never know... good luck, and just get an estimate from dealer/mechanic that has your car on how much its gonna cost to fix it.

maybe the insurance company will cover it because it was an accident. i think it would be considered comprehensive if you can blame it on flooding or something

so the insurance company is going to make a claim, but they said that because the water damage caused mechanical instead of physical damage, then they probably wont cover it. i guess i would have rather hit a deer or had a tree fall on it

You *did* get a on the engine after your mis-adventure. It'd be nice if that counted for something.

Not sure how you'd go about using that to your advantage through - I can see everybody pointing fingers and you end up getting the short end of the stick.

Is the car still in warranty? I doubt the insurance company will do anything since it wasn't technically an accident. If the warranty doesn't cover it your screwed. I hope it is though.

It is, but just barely. I am at like 48k or just under. I just talked to the claims people and they said they were going to send someone out in the next day or two. She said something like "we have to make sure it was caused by the water", and i asked "what would make you not cover the costs" and she said that they had to look at the maintenance history or something.

My buddy who works for State Farm ,the same company i have, said that if they dont cover it then maybe Acura can cover it for not finding the problem when it was originally brought in, but we will have to see about that. And also because it was a single person accident i may have some points against me with the insurance.

newest update. after i got done talking with the claims people, they called my house...i am still on the folks insurance...and they told them that as long as it is due to the water and not a lack of maintenance on my part then it will be covered. but i am not going to be too excited until its in writing.

good luck bro...and the "i should've just hit a deer" comment was wrong...not b/c im an animal lover (in fact i hate deer and they're over populated), its b/c i hit a deer a little over a week ago, got my estimate at 4k give or take...my body shop guy called and told my insurance company that the radiator support was bent/cracked and my radiator as well...insurance company is saying that they dont believe it "just from a deer hitting the car"

moral of my story, FUCK INSURANCE COMPANIES...for real, why do we pay them so much if they dont want to cover what needs to be done

you dont want a tree falling on your car.... i had an infiniti i30 and 2 wks after i got my TL a tree fel on my i30... totaled it (because repairs were approx. 10G)... so just keep your fingers crossed and hopefully everything will work out for the better

Wow, sorry to hear this. This is the kind of thing I was talking about in the other thread, you get the water out and it runs fine for a while. Probably had a bent rod from the water and it beat itself to death.

It's good they're going to cover it and it's good you were honest about it. Keep us updated!

Edit: Are they sure it's a broken piston and not a severely blown headgasket? Before you shut the engine off, were there any abnormal noises besides it running rough? Any oil under the car?

I remember you ran into a puddle during those hurricane after storms, what did the mechanic say about that? Did they tear your engine down?

What freeway were you exiting off of? 1.5 hr tow!

Definitely need to hear some numbers for new motor and labor.

You cannot compress liquids. If water gets into a cylinder, the piston is not able to complete it's compression cycle. It literally locks up. The piston can't move to top dead center and rods get bent. He probably waited l ongenough for the water to exit the crankcase, so he was able to drive for a while. Like someone said above, the bent rod probably beat itself to death.

after i hit the water it stalled instantly. i called for roadside assistance and had them tow it to the nearest dealership. they removed the spark plugs and blew the water out. they also flushed the oil like 5-8 times in order to get all the excess out. then..they sent me on my way. it was driving fine but was advised to get a compression test, so i did. this was probably like a month after it was submerged. the test came back in spec, with five between 190 and 205, and one at like 185 or so. then, wednesday rolls around and it finally died. so it probably went close to three months without a problem, which was very nice, but i was always worried that something was going to happen sooner or later.

alright, so i finally have an update. i went to the dealership to grab some items out of the car, and, i was told that the insurance company approved the repair. the only bad thing is that they only approved a used replacement engine, with 45k, and not the rebuild of my current engine. it needs at least a new short block, but because my engine has 48k miles on it they didnt want to put the money in to just repair.

so, can anyone see any issues with this? i was told it was used, and not rebuilt, so they kind of worries me on how it was taken care of during the its 45k life. the the good news is that they want to get it back to me by next friday...

Being that it wasn't a factory defect, it would be hard to push for a new motor.

To tell you the truth, I would take a slightly used factory engine over a rebuilt any day. Rebuilds never last as long as factory engines.

If it makes you feel better, tell them you want to be there before they put the heads on to inspect the cylinders and have them do a compression check after it's all together.

If the insurance company approved a used engine they will more than likely use the complete engine and not swap the heads. This would be extra labor that they may not agree to cover. I would recommend you keep the replacement engine intact so they don't have to mess with head gaskets and such.

As for the compression test. Definitely have them test all 6 cylinders. Also see if you can get them to replace valve and oil pan gaskets as well as front and rear seals on the used motor. If they dont, you should pay for it. It's a great investment for little extra cost.

and thanks Trew for the suggestions, but dont mind the engine-idiot question from me...i know what the oil pan gasket is, but can you go in to more detail on the front and rear seals as well as the valve gasket. i am just not familiar with those parts or where they are located. i just dont want to sound stupid when i talk to them.

i had a cia in my old car and i sucked in water too and they had to change the whole motor....the insurance covered the whole thing.

For future reference, why did the insurance cover this? Was it covered along the lines of "flood damage" or what? Just curious in case the need ever arises.

Ya know, i dont know the exact reason. From what they told me they would only cover it if it was due to the water, and not from the lack of maintenance on my part. The dealership did cover up my CAI just in case, but i am not sure if that would have mattered any...probably, but who knows. I have a buddy with State Farm and he said that since Acura already looked at it twice since the water incident, then they could have possibly been somewhat to blame for not finding the problem in the first place, so the dealership probably did all that they could to get the insurance company to cover it. I also know for a fact that during the time that the original problem took place, they had a lot of claims to deal with because of the excess flooding in our area, so that probably helped me out because it wasnt just some random accident.
