Can you accidentally shift into reverse?

I have only owned cars that have a button on the shifter for automatics.
I always had to press the button on the shifter to get from Park to Reverse or from Drive to Reverse.

I don't recall the TL having a button on the shifter.
What and how does the car prevent you from accidentally shifting into reverse?

Thanks!

the car comes w/ a lock on the AT model where you would have to apply the brakes in order to get to the Reverse. there is a way to unlock this so you can get to Reverse w/ out applying the brakes

I just picked up my car and read the manual cover to cover. I don't have it in front of me now, but I think I remember it saying that the car will not go into reverse above a very low speed (a few MPH). I don't know how it does it. How this helps...

i dont know about the auto, but the manual has an electronic safety that wont let you engage into reverse unless you're at a full stop

Well after posting my question, I figured that Acura wouldn't be stupid enough to let that happen.

Wouldn't it be funny though, if the new Tranny was 100% perfect except for the fact that it didn't lock out the Reverse when the car was moving at speed? LOL... OK maybe not that funny... :toothless

What you say is true about going from PARK to REVERSE, but there is no lock, or requirement to step on the brake or any other pedal, when going from drive or neutral to reverse.

However, not to worry because according to page 182 of the owner's manual:

Your vehicle has a reverse lockout so you cannot accidentally shift to Reverse from neutral or any other driving position when the vehicle speed exceeds 5-6 mph (8-10 kph).

Plus, Acura said: "The new TL benefits from a new 5-position shift gate that simplifies the operation of the transmission. It features a quieter linkage and a speed-controlled reverse lockout solenoid to prevent transmission damage."

The speed range is like what Ron said above.
