buying used--how hard car has been pushed?

I am planning on buying a used TL. I have seen an individual selling his vehicle who stated that he's not pushed it at all . . .he said never even revved it beyond 4K RPM

How would this make a difference to a buyer, and is there anything a mechanic can look for to see if the car had been pushed or not.

Can you tell I am busy taking care of my kids and working and not reading Car and Driver?

i don't think i would want to buy a TL that hadn't been pushed beyond 4k. The VTEC would have never been engaged. Its good for the engine to rev it up from time to time. After all it is a honda engine, they love to rev near the red line.

The dealership can actually do a test that can tell how many times the rev limiter has been hit or if it was over revved.

They did that to my car when I lost compression in the #2 & 5 cylinders. I know for a fact i have done both but they didnt say anything to me and fixed it under warranty.

I also agree with MREMPP that engine loves to be revved. I dont believe someone wouldn't take it past 4K

Who it was owned by? A professional guy for lots of commuting. He said the dealership had service records and that it was on time. I contacted him just after he decided to sell it to carmax.

CARMAX lowballs you to death. I bet they bought that for 6-7K less than what they are selling it for.
