If I had good advice like this when I was 17 I would now have $20K in the bank instead of a few memories of a bad ass civic with 320hp... what Im saying is dont waste your money on your car right now, yes its fun to do some mods here and there, but wait until you can afford it. I made that mistake when I was young and I have nothing to show for it except for a bunch of credit card debt, you never get back what you put into it

I was looking at a wrecked 08 type S on copart a couple of months ago and let me tell you this; there is noooooo way you'll get one for 2 to 3 grand. I mainly wanted the navi, swap interiors, and front brembos. Then part out the rest of the car to make my money back. Dont forget to find out about hidden fees that auction sites have and transportation fees.

do you already have a wrecked car in mind? a wrecked TL-S with usable parts wont be anywhere near 2-3k.
And this all better be on your dime, not your dads.

'07 TL Type-S
You can see how much it would be to buy the parts separately and then compare it to how much you could get a wrecked one for. If most of the parts you need are usable, I say go for it. But just so you know you might be sitting on the rest of the car for a while.
That being said, I doubt you will find any kind of wrecked TL with usable parts for 2-3k.

Even you find one smash up Type S the price still be around $9k-$13k, insurance pay almost top $$$ for these car and they won't let them go so cheap.

Enjoy your car. Anyone would be extremely happy to have your car (especially because it was free). Either save your money or use it to add your own personal touch to your car instead of making it something it's not.

There is no way in hell you will get your monies worth out of buying a 'wrecked' TL.
You have a damn nice car being a 2008 especially at 17. You do realize that most people on this site drive Base model TLs and each and everyone of them find ways to make their car look unique. There is so much potential with ANY TL whether it be Base or Type-S.
But I understand where you are coming from when you say your dad doesn't want you modding the car. My parents were that way for awhile, but my dad has become a lot more 'tolerant' lately because I've been taking on more responsibility with the car and where my money goes each month.
My advice? Save your money each month and when your 'nest is full' you can either mod the hell out of your car (tastefully of course) or sell the TL and use your savings toward a new car!

Three Wheelin'
Wouldn't it be cheaper to purchase the Type S front/rear bumper, depo/oem TL-S tails....basically anything that has the exterior looks of a TL-S without going into engine swaps and etc? Like everyone above has said, realistically, you won't be able to find a totaled TL-S for 2-3k.

Just do it!
As terrible as it may sound for advice but I hope you learn and get something out of it in the end. Everyone go through phases to realize whatever it maybe. Let this be yours. Its part of growing up. And beside you sound like you can afford it or at least your dad can. (now just think about it)
Good luck kid!

OP, don't even bother buying a totaled TL, that's just stupid, obviously you're thinking way over your head.
Keep the car you have now which is perfectly fine and start modding it. If you like the Type-S that much swap the tail lights to the Type-S ones and put a Type-S bumper on it.

Buying a wrecked TL for 2-3k ain't a bad idea, at least not as bad as shit I was doing age 15-17.
Thought I'd be cool trading stocks in computer class at highschool, bought $4,000 of MSFT, ... watch it go to $2,000. Stays there for years. Finally sell it.
Also worthless public education... I actually thought taxes are a once a year thing instead of quarterly. So... what did I do? Filed my taxes in April the next year. Of course IRS fined me $10,000 for not filing every quarter. For the next 5 years I tried every appeal and offer in compromise making the case that at 15, being my first time filing, I should not be expected to know about estimated taxes unless the same government's public education system bothers at least to tell me of the existence of such a thing. Consequently, in order to avoid trouble with the IRS trying to seize my wages, etc. I was not able to work or earn any money from 2000 until 2010. The lost decade, no single tax return during that period for me.
And no I did not get out of the $10,000 by not earning during that period, still had to pay every penny.
My advice to op: GO AHEAD! Do it. Just remain cognizant that not only will your priorities change, but even the options you have available that you are aware of will drastically change, and you will always look back at money spent in the past and wish you had it to use for something else. Always! So maybe... if you want to buy something for $2000, only let yourself do it if you have $4000 and save half for the future.

Times have changed. There is no fixed penalty now when not paying your estimated quarterlies. Last year I didn't pay quarterlies and the penalty was between 5-8% on the amount of underpayment for each quarter, cumulatively. I'm from Ohio too by the way. I'm going to guess that being required to pay estimated quarterlies and the age of 15 you were probably involved in something online - affiliate marketing?

Fortunately I was in WV at the time and probably got in less trouble with the state than I might have in Ohio. I was running a whole bunch of adult websites back in the golden age when some sponsors were paying $.25/click. I was totally "legal" in the sense of using content which was properly licensed from photographers and content providers, etc. just given my age it was illegal for me to posses the materials lol.
The 10k... well, don't let me exaggerate, there were other mistakes and penalties mixed in and I was a bit late and they tacked on interest like crazy... but none-the-less a shocking number when I had $10k in deductions and etc. yet was somehow in the 35% tax bracket. Really bad first IRS experience for a young boy!

It turns out it's not as cheap as it seems. The bid for this car sat at $2k for like a week, and then shot up to over $10k around 4 hours before the auction ended, when all the serious bidders pounced.
Add to that the number hidden/small print fees, the costs/logistics of transporting and storing he car and it turns out that it's really not worth the money.
Unfortunately with cars as new and valuable as the 3G TL, salvaging from wrecked cars isn't a very financially viable option.

I buy wrecked cars and 07-08 auto tl-s have been going for 6-15k depending on damage. 6k is one that is basically fubar and the motors are usually toast. Save your coin and use your money on college or strippers.

I think we're in agreement that he should save his money, but the OP is from Texas. State taxes are very different: some states have no income tax (like Texas or Washington), some have no/limited sales tax (like Delaware). Lets not scare him

I'm 22 and my parents still don't want me modding my car, even though i pay for everything. Just explain to them its part of who you are and if they can't accept that, then they are better off getting a different son from somewhere else.

The difference between you and the OP is that he isn't paying for it with his own money.
