Break Service and Fluid for 309.00 ???!!! Good or Too MUcH?

I was just wondering how much have you guys paid. My car was vibrating at 37,000 miles. They would cover it up to 15,000 miles, so i have to pay for this. They tell me

219.00 for Resurfacing Rotors and Break Pads

Plus some 80 or 90 bucks more for changing my break fluid. (supposively)sp.. its BLACK.. and needs to be changed.

Looking at a total of around $ 309.00 For this service. This is DEALER price.. should i go with them or have some other place do it. Does this require ACTUAL ACURA techs doing the job?

Unless you do your own work, its always going to be expensive, and you will never know if they need to do what they do.
The brake fluid is fine, you should change brake fluid, but only about every 3 or 4 years, and it wont be black in 2 or 3 years, thats for sure.

You can buy NEW front rotors for about $40.00 I think, brake fluid costs about $7.00 a quart.

If the brakes are warped, I would never bother with turning them, all modern rotors are thin to start with, and if you shop on line, new quality rotors from brembo or ATE are cheap.

Brakes warp from lack of attention to detail during assembly, there are things you can do to prevent disks warping under normal use.

Ok, So other than the feeling of the car, how do I tell if the rotor (disc right?) is warped?

At speeds of 55-65mph, when I apply on the brake it vibrates. At LOW speeds, like for example, stoping at a stop sign or red light, I feel this rocking motion. As if I were gently applying brake and then release, apply and release and so on.

Should I just change the pads and see if it goes away or like I stated above, how can I (me, and no shop trying to take my money) tell if I need rotors(discs?)

Basically...there is a minimum thickness allowable by law and when your rotor gets too thin...they cannot turn it any more. As for the thickness of the rotor....I dont know - havent gotten to that point yet...but I would think they could be turned (resurfaced) at least once before having to be replaced. As for the fluid change...you can see that fairly easily by looking at the master cylinder under the hood. (its clear I think) Under normal circumstances it really shouldnt be black yet....unless it has been overheated some way due to way heavy braking that caused a heat transfer somehow - and that would not tend to be so being they lasted 37000 miles. It sounds like your rotors are warped though. Bottom line....$219 is about avg dealer cost for changing pads and resurfacing your rotors....getting the fluid done is up to you and what you see in the master cylinder. Brake fluid does need to be changed....when is a total judgement call. Some say more often the better, some say dont mess with it. Basically....I think brake fluid has a tendency to attract moisture (which is why it doesnt have a huge shelf life sitting around in the shop for years and years) so some like to get it changed out every 25,000 miles or so to avoid probs with the inner brake parts; but again...that is totally a judgement call. It is supposedly a sealed system...so in all reality....heat and age are probably its worst enemies....

yup get new rotors... as brett mentioned. I am not sure about the 40 per though... 37k is a bit early for a brake job... All depends on how you drive. As for fluid being black that's weird.

If you cannot do it yourself, go to a local garage and get it done. I am sure it can be done for less. New rotors can run about 70 a piece (depending on where you get them).

Now 1 last question, i hope.... I am lost when it comes to names.

Yes...most likely it is just the front. If you are going with new rotors....that isnt a bad idea....but I originally gave you advise thinking money was an issue? If not....jesus...change em all out!

like said ^, brake fluid and moisture...hm...acura said every 3 years and that's what i'll do although my last honda b-fluid lasted 90Kmi+ over 7 years with no problem. ur call.

$42.16 each at import replacement parts.
$26.00 each at www.getcoolparts.com.

I like brembo or ate brands, so would likely shop around for those at low prices.

$25.00 a set for the very good pbr deluxe brake pads at getcoolparts.com.

So, theoreticly, you could have all new front brakes for about $85.00
(no shipping or sales tax with getcoolparts.com.
The VW guys use them all the time and they are good to deal with.

$219 for Acura to do pads and resurface rotors is good! The pads are $70 alone. My dealer wanted $165 for the pads and replacement, but like another $125 to resurface the rotors, although he said is the car is still in warranty hand vibrated he woudl do that under warranty. Personally I have had some bad expieriences with no name pads, I try and use the MFG pads, only exception is on less critical cars, (old beater and stuff) I will use Bendix pads. So if you look at the pads being $70 you are paying $140 in labor to do the pads and cut the rotors, that is a decent price for a dealer job. I would not do the fluid unless the car had closer to 100K on it or the fluid were 4+ years old.
