Body Side Moldings
Body side moldings, to be or not to be is the question! Hello folks, those of you that DO have BSM's if you were to purchase the car again, would you have the BSM's installed again or not? I was curious if they actually function well, as for I am not sure if I like the looks of them and if it is worth the functionality of the BSM's. Thanks for your insight here folks.

I just park my car farther from others, good for the car, and good for me (exercise)
IMO BSM don't go well with the lines of the car, at least I think it looks better without them

I bought them off E*Bay and put them on myself. Already, it has saved my doors twice!! Best part is, if you decide you absolutely don't like them, you can remove them with a hair dryer set on HOT. People who say it ruins the lines of the car don't know what they are talking about. The BSM match exactly the lines of the car when installed according to instructions.

I would definitely get them again. I've had them on every car and they really do protect the doors. I even like the way they look on the TL. I would say get them, it's a good investment.

Only white...
I deff would go with with them on the white as with my car.. yet I think in the other colors it doesn't seem to be as nice.. yet that's only my opinion... If you live in the city NYC no matter what car you get.. if you want to keep it dent, scratch, pushed, knocked, or bumbed.. GET IT.

I ordered an Anthracite Metallic exterior color with the full underbody spoiler, rear deck lid spoiler, door edge trim and body side modlings to be put on. Not sure if I wan't the BSM's to be put on, I think it goes agains't the lines of the car and makes it look like a younger person's ride and not as refined elegant looking. But it is a toss up @ this point. Thank you very much all...

Fugly - almost as bad as the ones on the C5 Corvettes. Me no likee. I would bet money that the body design team did not have them on their concept sketches. Only thing worse are the door moldings, which ruin the crisp lines by interjecting a break in the sight lines.

Though it did have high-pressure nossles instead of windshield wipers....

Against the lines of the car????? Which lines are you looking at??? Whatever.... Anyway, try them on, if you don't like them then simply remove them. No harm, no foul.

Tthe high belt line detail iand integration with the side markers are great on the TL - the BSM and door edge guards divert the eye. And it is obviously a matter of taste.

I was considering getting the BSM's and decided against it without seeing them on a car. Thanks to the people who posted the picture of the Anthracite TL with the moldings, it just confirmed my decision not to get them. I agree that it totally destroys the lines of the TL. It probably looks better than a door full of parking lot dings, but I'd personally rather park my car a mile away to avoid the dents rather than look at the car with moldings. For those that don't have the option of parking in a safe location.....they're probably a good choice to avoid dings.

PS: Parking in the fire lane is a good way to get a ticket or having your car "keyed"

JetJock, normally I'd agree, but that was in my driveway while I was detailing the car. I can fit one car in the driveway w/o obstructing the firelane, but that day I had my Cadillac and my TL in the driveway. I wouldn't leave the car there unattended because you're right - IT WOULD GET TOWED.

The Puffy Lumpers are the single most ugly accessory ever created by Honda for any vehicle they have ever released to market. Here's why you don't want them:
1. The TL's design is based on sharp boxy angles and indents. The Lumpers must be designed for the 1986 Ford Tempo as they are rounded and puff out. Any first year art student will tell you that you don't mix different shapes on the same form as it creates a conflict and a distraction.
2. The only reason to want the Puffies is to avoid dings in the doors. News flash: Unless you park next to compact cars like Yugo's and Kia's, every SUV and truck and minivan's doors are going to plunk your TL anyway as the Lumpers sit too low on the doors. They're useless.
3. Lastly, it's better to spend $200 over 3 years to remove the 1.25 dings that you will statistically incur as a result of not having the Puffy Lumpers than spend more money to have them installed in the first place. It's one thing to not want dents in the doors, but better to have people say "oooh, he's got a dent" for a week until you can get it pulled out than have people say "why the hell did he f*ck up his beautiful car and turn it into a laughingstock" 365 days a year for three years.

I toiled back and forth on this issue but ultimately decided to get them and I couldn't be happier. To me, the line seems to complete the vehicle's seemingly naked door panels. Plus, my work often finds me parking in tight garages. I'd rather have these lines than dings.

BJ,
you have mentioned all this before. I laughed the first few times. However, I do think all three of your statements are false.
#1: I'm not sure who/what your art teacher is... but the TL is not based off of "sharp-boxy" angles. Look at a Cadillac STS, that is sharp angles etc.. The TL has rounded curves and corners every where you look. Even the "indents" are of a concave-rounded, curved design.... I'll go as far to say this may be a subjective perception, but no-one I ever asked thought/thinks the car has a boxy/sharp angles apperance...
#2: One thing you're right on, SUVs/trucks will dent you... BSMs or not. Also, a back door of any vehicle, due to current body styles, will make contact above the BSM. First off, the BSMs on the TL are not "too low on the door". They are right where they need to be, they are on the apex of the door (apex represents a curve, not a "boxy angle"). They may be low for some vehicles yet are installed properly on the TL. Second, all of the minivans that I deal with are not 4 wheel drive thus sit low enough that the BSMs are quite effective. AND, due to the rear "sliding" doors on a minivan, the chance of a young & careless kid dinging the TL is much reduced. Now, back to the SUVs and other back door issues. I'm not sure of the exact stats but my guess is less than 50% of the vehicles on the road are SUVs/trucks. And, less than 50% of cars parking next to you have rear seat passengers, thus a large percentage of Non-BSM contacts is reduced. Bottom line, the BSMs perform their job "when able" - and the "when able" is actually a greater percentage of time than when "not able"....
#3: Most would rather avoid dings and everything it takes to fix them and/or deal with issues from a poor or botched repair. As for your 1.25 dings/3 years... Even though I know you fabricated this stat, I can attest that my wifes 2001 Z71 Suburban - being three years old as of Sept., having NO BSMs, has had no fewer than 8 door dings. Out of all 8, only one would NOT have been stopped by BSMs! Thank God GM uses good paint AND my local paintless dent repair guy is awesome! (by the way, your $200 dollar stat would be more applicable if referenced as an "annual" expense)
Lastly, I for one could care less what others think about my decision to install BSMs. "Peer" pressure is for people with low self esteem and little character....
BJ - I would once again take the advice of your shrink and stay away from BSM threads. The only "puffy lumper" is in your pants stemming from your "lust" to install voluptuous, round and curvy BSMs. I caress mine often with Zaino.

Though it did have high-pressure nossles instead of windshield wipers.... [/QUOTE]
That does sound really cool, but I'm sure it was a little impractical from an engineering perspective; I'm mean, such a system would be great for rain in warmer climates, but how would it handle piled up snow on the windshield, and how would it wet-wash away the grey haze of road spray from salt used in inclement weather, or bug splat? Once all those issues are addressed, sign me up!
