base used to be 270? Then SAE changed its standard & now it's 258?

It's funny even lots of the bimmer drivers are doubting this guy's claim ....

wait what? hes not saying base has 286hp

"I look over and it is the new TL Type-S, I remember it being a ballzy car so I check the specs when I get here.

Engine Size and Type: 3.5-liter V6
Engine Horsepower: 286 at 6,200 rpm"

base does not have a 3.5 liter.. only the type s does

Lets shed some light

A. Engine Size and Type: 3.5-liter V6
Engine Horsepower: 286 at 6,200 rpm
Engine Torque: 256 lb.-ft. at 5,000 rpm
Transmission: Five-speed automatic with SportShift manual gear selection
Curb weight, lbs.: 3,680

^^ specs of the REGULAR TL ^^

B. TL-S (since it only comes in MANUAL) will rip anything less of 540/6 from a dig, and anything less of 540/6+540iA from a 40mph-ish roll. I can even vouch for a 540iA Sport (with 3.15 Diff) staying pretty darn close from a dig

C. Im not sayin OP is makin $hit up, but what made you think it was an S-Type? Did it have these wheels and these dual exhaust tips?

I guess i made my point

lol, at least most of those guys do agree that the TL-S should have walked on that guy. I love the different opinions though.

I actually saw a surprising amount of respect for the TL there.

It kills me when people think punching it when someone's on there tail and pulling away constitutes a "race". The OP is definitely a moron. The guy in the TL was likely just using him as a speed shield.

................where the hell are these numbers coming from for the base HP on a TL? With the new SAE ratings the base TL is at 258bhp.....not 286bhp.......TL-S is at 286bhp. Look at the Acura website:

Well.....I would not buy a BMW for the plain fact that parts are a hell of dent in the wallet and well.....reliability wise......yeah....not much of a contect there. Not saying BMW's are bad cars, love the look.....but after driving both....."WWD" is the one for me.

LOL....the numbers were paraphrased from the BMW forum. You may want to show them that link. We all know what the TL puts out for power!

If anyone here drives a 540 and gets pulled on by a this acura they need a tuneup really bad. Like really really bad. I've never been pulled on by the type S. Not even close. The 540 in actuality puts down about 300-310 hp, not the advertised 280 or 282. Maybe the vanos seals need some work on those 540's that cant pull hard.
^ Perfect example of somebody who knows NOTHING a car's performance.

not to really call you out or anything, but this post is ENTIRELY incorrect. i really don't know where to start except that maybe you should learn more about the TL and TL-S. a VAST majority of the TL-S's only come in automatic. that was the glaring mistake. second, the specs you posted are for a TL-S, not a base.

a 335i/xi would EAT a TL-S alive and show absolutely no mercy.

i'm wondering where you got the 3.15 diff from on the 540, not saying that is incorrect, but just wondering...

and no, you're point is not made. sorry.

The interesting point this thread has indicated to me is that it seems the higher up the luxury line you go, the dumber people get...

I started in the VW world, specifically in a Diesel... The guys at TDIClub were a different breed. I'm talking guys that could speak German, and buy european spec AWD drivetrains, import them, and retrofit them into Us-Spec cars... all bolt on, all using OEM parts. It was nuts, and hangin there was a wallet waster. Multiple chip tuners on the site, you name it.

I moved to Acurazine, and no offense, but the IQ went down a bit. There are lots of smart guys here, but nothing like there. I like here too though.

I browse aound the BMW site today, and it was like going from tdiclub to acurazine...

You would think as cars became more expensive, only smarter, more successful people would be able to buy them... thus thinning the heard of dumbasses... but it's the exact opposite. It's like natural selection in reverse.

So it makes me wonder... how can there be so many dumbasses out there making the kind of scratch to easily fford a 540i, while being so ignorant... and WTF am i doing wrong?

it's not that the are getting dumber per se. It's more that their mechanical knowledge is lower.

I mean if you got the green to buy cars like that, you're more than likely going to have the green to pay someone to do it for you.

I read the entire thread on bimmerforum. The majority agrees that the new TL-S could have won if trying.

One guy was misinformed (about the HP of the base TL). That doesn't make everyone a moron as you suggested "BMW morons".

You'll be surprised that a lot of TL owners don't know squat about BMW.

This thread has clearly moved to how figures are mistaken and how higher up luxury auto owners are dumb. Since we can't move this thread, feel free to open it up in car talk.
