Black transmission fluid
Black transmission fluid
Hi I have a 2006 Acura TL 86,000 miles 2 days ago my car wouldn't go past 40mph popped the hood my transmission fluid is BLACK now my car wont do anything it will start but I can't drive it HELP
Instead of being sarcastic, and dooshy, and wasting your time like the 2 useless comments above when you're obviously in need, i'll try and help you !!!
Sounds like you need to drain your fluid buddy. Go to Honda and get some DW-1 ATF fluid.
Your gonna have to do a 3x3 change which is basically draining the fluid from the bottom drain plug 3 seperate times and adding 3 quarts each time. A total of 9 quarts you will need.
If you have not changed your 3rd and 4th pressure sensors, now would be a good time to do so as well as changing the filter in your transmission.
Hopefully you didn't cause to much sever damage to your transmission.Hope i was able to be of assistance

. Your trans is most likely past the point of no return, meaning a fluid change is just a waste of time. Sorry to say this, but I think you should start shopping for a new trans. Good luck. I hope everything works out.

like what mattymattB said, do a 3x3 drain first. in the mean time, look for a new/rebuilt trans just in case the drains dont work. hope it helps
I would do a 3x3 with the cheapest fluid you can, and if it improves at all, do it again, might buy you some time before a replacement. My 06 with 92K miles shifts great, it was a little rough when I first bought it but I changed the pressure sensors and fluid and now it's great. I would try the cheapest Dex III blend you can find, dirt cheap at Walmart and do a flush, drive a bit, another flush, etc for 3 times. If it seems back to normal do it again with a better fluid. Can't see a reason not to do the pressure switches, you could always swap them to the new trans but that's probably not the issue.

Maintenance is a lot cheaper than repairs. You should have kept up on the condition of the fluid before it ever got to that point.
I suppose giving you a earful at this point doesn't help. I would take 350's advice. Try flushing with some cheap fluid and see if it helps. You never know, you might get lucky. Otherwise, you're looking at a rebuild.

Follow what IHC, Swoosh, Inaccurate have said about doing a 3X3 with Redline type F and 1qt of D4 also change the two switches. Flushing with cheap fluid is a good idea to see if it helps, if not a new trans is in your future, if you install a new trans be sure you have new switches and use Redline with the formula suggested in the post, I did all this to my 06 with 68k and it shifts perfect
trans fluid = black = unit is done.
I agree on trying the 3x3 first, but what is the utility of using the "cheapest" fluid you can find? He'd save only about $6 per flush instead of DW1. I'd suggest using good fluid to get good results.
Black fluid does not mean the trans is done. My fluid was black before the car had 20k miles and it now has 124,000 trouble free miles. Some fluids change color due to their additives just from heat cycling. The red is just dye anyway, the ATF looks just like any other oil without the dye.
Usually heat and/or a crappy base oil are the reasons for black fluid. Black fluid can be from a terminal illness like slipping clutches cooking the fluid or the fluid could be heavily oxidized.
If the car stopped moving there's a good chance the transmission is done but I would at least do a 1X3 with a cheap Dex III or Type F fluid and see if it improves.
Have you checked the fluid level by chance?
