Best way to deal with out of date warranty

05 TL. So I think I have a transmission issue. (still trying to get a precise diagnosis) The problem is that I live about 2.5 hours away from the nearest Acura dealership. I talked to my dealership and they claim that it is out of warranty.

If it IS indeed a transmission problem, any suggestions on how to deal with the dealership and/or Acura when trying to get the transmission fixed/dealt with?

If it's out of warranty, looks like you'll be out of pocket for it. If that's the case anyways, I would take it to a transmission specialist with a good rep.

Taking it to Acura for the problem will cost $$$ compared to a private guy. Acura will likely just replace the transmission ($$$). A private tranny specialist might be able to fix the one you got and save serious parts money. Labor will still be high, but every bit counts.

How many miles are on the vehicle? Did you ever have the dealer perform any customer pay services? I worked for dealers for many years and we always would take care of a customer out of warranty of they brought their vehicle in for maintenance services. Sometime it might be covering parts or labor, but we would take care of our own.

It has only about 60k on it..which makes me more upset. I'm also kind of concerned about towing costs, etc. for the car...since it will be about 2.5 hours.

automatic or manual trans?
auto has a well known trans problem that you need to have diagnosed by acura then the service manager calls corp for ok for `GOODWILL` warranty or lower cost

a shop rebuilds yours in the same case with same parts acura gets and if they have not done many of them often have it fail and back in you go for another try- see what their warranty is

acura has special shops that rebuild all the warranty returns, gets new case (04 05) if needed and whatever new soft parts are needed inside, does use some good hard metal parts from other units to make rebuilds
Its a straight drop and replace- 1 day type of thing, does take a few days to get trans in hand

If goodwill or regular waranty acura will take care of the tow and hook you up with a loaner car
Any chance you had service or a trans fluid change done at the dealer?

Ignore the phone person or service writer who says NO, only the MANAGER has authority to deal with goodwill cases,, and the rest are there to make money

has aamco or someone diagnosed the problem?
Many TLs can be fixed with replacement or cleaning of trans selenoids and secret filter

Description of problem?

you can start a file with acura care 1-800-382 2238 x5
ignore the phone person who says no and ask for a real rep to call you back
Normally they need it diagnosed at dealer then rep can come there and see it if needed, but being so far away a rep MAY be willing to come to you

depends on what your trans did- but corp is pretty good about helping you if you profess love for the car and brand, told 2 friends to buy acura and this is your 2nd or 3rd car from them- they love loyalty and hate bad marks on customer service and letters to corp

Here's my thread talking about the problem

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/possible-transmission-760420/

The thing is I don't remember when I last changed the fluid if I even did at all. I have about 60k miles on the car (AT) I called my dealership and they said I'm out of warranty and referred me to another dealership?

Call client services and open a case on it. You should be able to get them to cover some of the repair cost since you aren't that far out of warranty. The car shouldn't need a new trans at 60k miles. They might only cover 50-60%, but it's better than nothing.

If you didn't change the fluid, that is fine, per Acura's recomendation is only needs to be changed at 60k miles for severe service, 100k in normal cases. The recomendation is a joke, but you can use it against them in this case.

Call Acura Corporate at the number above. When my tranny in my 00TL went up, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had for a car repair. Seriously.
They extended the warranty on the 2G trannys due to class action, but they really took care of me.

call Client Services

If your car is dealer maintained, call client services as suggested. I just got my car back yesterday, transmission went out, no warning, just gone. I was in a panic, didn't have 4k for a transmission. I have over 111k miles on an 05. I just knew I would be stuck with the bill. Because of my maintenance record Acura went 50/50 with me. They even put me in a loaner 2010 TL for a week which was great.
good luck

If you merely called the dealer you got the service WRITER not the MANAGER who is in charge of decisions and deals with corp for you

Did you piss off this dealer in the past? why would they refer you to another dealer just because out of warranty? thats really odd
talk to the service manager and see what happens that way

If it were a used TL with CPO they would cover the trans to 100,
if you have owned it since new they should cover you `goodwill`

Have to know the trans is the real problem before going further but customer care is the next level after the dealer manager has refused to assist you

Having owned 5 Hondas and 1 Acura I know for a fact that on SOME occasions Honda will authorize a major out-of-warranty repair for repeat customers. Not sure about Acura but no reason to think otherwise. Bottom line is it never hurts to mention this fact (if you are a repeat customer)...after all, all they can say is 'no'.

They should cover it. I didn't have too much of an issue getting my brother's car covered when he was out of warranty.

This information + recommended service not due + google is your defense.
There is plenty of information on here and the net talking about our 'glass' transmissions. Honda frequently does the right thing if approached correctly.
