BEAR has an after dinner snack.

Guess it just had to happen sooner or later but a 3G decided he wanted to run out of the Six Forks /540 traffic light heading north about 9PM tonight. What makes it interesting is the curb lane that I was in ends a few hundred yards up the road. Most likely the plan was to hold me in the lane forcing me to back off giving him the win.

Not sure of the year or transmission of the 3G. What happened I think surprised both of us. I let him roll a few feet to be sure then went. Part way through 1st gear I was fully in front & pulling away. Crossed over into the left lane 3 or so car lengths up never getting over 60.

What convinced me he was trying hard was the silly stuff of riding my bumper about 2 miles up to where Six Forks goes hard left & he stayed on six forks & I went straight onto Possim Track Rd.

Its new for me , just sold my 3G 6MT to get it, but its been around for a few years. They don't make all that many of them so most non BMW guys are not aware of them. I am pretty sure the 3G driver did not know because he was not a happy camper he lost so bad. It sort of fits between the 335i & M3. Uses the twin turbo N54 motor tuned for more horsepower & torque plus a WOT over boost (14.5psi) function that kicks in for 7 to 9 seconds. The 335i is listed as 300hp/300ftlb & the IS has 330hp/320ftlb that lifts to 370ftlb with over boost.

Also has different front & rear skins with an extra oil cooler & extra water radiator behind the end scoops, a large intercooler behind the center one & brake cooling ducts. The rear panel is a functional diffuser, high performance exhaust system & you can generally see the black chrome exhaust ends. Few other bits & pieces like 7sp DCT transmission, bigger wheels & tires, sport suspension, sport seats etc. Only comes in a Coupe or Convertible with 6MT or 7DCT.

I have to say Bear, that's an incredibly beautiful car; enjoy it! I have a few questions for ya though: does the 335is have the same "lag" time as the 335i? I've heard of a particular "click" that most 335i owners have to deal with. If you're using the paddles, and holding a gear for say, a pass , if you push the acceleration pedal pasted the "click" the car upshifts to a lower gear. True?

On a side note (and I'm not trying to pick a fight here): I beat a 335is last weekend on a roll race. Albeit, he had 2 passengers versus my 1 passenger. Still, a good couple car lengths I assumed a combination of driver error + the "click." Then again, I pulled away in a straight line when he had the jump, on a previous run. Lucky? PS G37 6MT w/ a few bolt-ons, tune and gearing.

Should be a tick or two quicker than the e46. I remember one road test got 108 mph trap on the 335is. It's a little heavier than the e46, but these things are putting down ~300 whp/340 tq. I think most e46 M3's put down 265-280 whp stock, and around 230 tq.

Gotcha but is it 335IS or 355IS as your signature says 355IS? Thanks for the info and enjoy it!

Will try to answer a few questions.

The I & IS have different non 6MT transmissions. The I has a standard Torque converter & planitary gear box "auto" just like the TL 5AT. The IS 7sp DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) is a 7 speed manual fully geared transmission with twin clutch discs that are hydraulically driven instead of being moved by a pedal & shift lever. The advantage is you don't have to lift the throttle to shift & the computer can shift way faster then a human. The 7DCT is quicker in all magazine tests including BMW's own specs then the 6MT.

The trans has multi modes + a sport version of each which has faster throttle tip in & harder shifts. There is put it in D & let it shift itself. Pull the lever to the left & its a ratchet shifter. Use the paddles (right up/left down) its in like a stick except that it will block an over rev on a downshift. No lag no hesitation just chirps on the shifts.

Never had much faith in wins from a roll even with close starts because there are too many variables. It assumes that both drivers know what the optimum revs required are & what gear they need to be in. Pick the wrong gear & its over before it starts.

Its a lot easier to compare time to speed from quarter mile tests. For example a IS DCT will go from 0-6 in 4.7, 0-100 in 11.4 seconds or 0 to 110 in 13.8 seconds. Under the same criteria a stock G-37IPL 348hp 6MT coupe will do 0-60 in 5.4, 0-100 in 12.9 & 0 to 110 in 15.5 seconds. I used the 348hp G-37 because its something like the IS in that it has more power the the regular version. Did not want to get into moded versions because with a JB4 piggyback the IS is in the 375+HP range. This is for under $500 because the car has all the cooling etc already installed.

To me a few years is more the one mine is a 2011

E46 I expect they are similar in some areas. The HP is the same but the IS has about 100ftlb more torque. More then likely the M3 is lighter & should corner better

Just feels like a 355
