I hate to start a thread for for something that's been asked about already. But, I've searched for the past hour and could not find anything other than some photos on Rockstar's journal. I've been intrigued on how to do the "red stripes" tail light mod to my base TL's tail lights. I really like the look of them and would like to know how to go about doing this. I just recently got ahold of another set of red base tail lights. If anyone would be ever so kind to point me in the right direction as I cannot find a how to.
I'm sure you all know what I am talking about, but for reference, I've borrowed a photo from Rockstar's journal:
1. Cutting open the tail light.
2. Disassemble the tail light & paint the pieces.
3. Sealing them back up.
1. Cutting them open.
All you need is a dremel cutting disc and of course a dremel.
There's actually a good line around the whole tail light to follow where to cut.
Cutting along the inner edge is the toughest, as you have to go through two layers of plastic.
2. Once you're able to separate the two halves (remove the two screws on the back first), you will only be working with the front half (the lens half).
Remove the chrome housing from the front lens. This part is tricky, I use phone repair tools to pry it up. At this point you may remove the brake light diffuser.
Once the front lens is separated, you may remove the turn signal diffuser which is held by a couple clips.
Take the brake light diffuser and turn signal diffuser and spray a couple of light even coats of VHT Niteshade, to preference.
To preference meaning the darker you paint it, the less visible your lights will be.
Then after they have dried, snap the turn signal diffuser back onto the chrome housing and then put the chrome housing back into the front lens.
Then you may put the brake diffuser back on.
3. To seal the tail lights, apply butyl (such as 3M window weld from NAPA) around the edge where you cut on the back housing side. Then press the front lens to the back housing firmly. This will make excess butyl ooze out. Flatten down the butyl that oozed out to ensure a good seal.
Recently picked up a pair of type-s tails from a junkyard for $50, and they came with the LED boards too! but the corner of the lens is chipped and I was wondering if anyone had any mod ideas with them? I have a spare set of 04-06 base tails so maybe I could cut them up and swap over the lens, not sure if they would look good though. Thoughts?
