"B" tuneup, do I really need to go to dealer?

hey, what does the "B" tuneup require me to do on the acura tl 04

Is it possible to find a cheaper way of doing it? oakland acura wants 170 dollars for it.

What does it include?

Do you have any tips to reduce cost?

B is oil change and tire rotation, plus a lot of stuff that they are supposed to do anyway.

For a complete list, see page 199 in the owner's manual.

The short answer is: Tell them you only want the oil and filter changed, should be around $25, if you need the tire rotation add about $30-35, and ask them to check the fluid levels and take a visual around the underbody that they should do anyway with the oil change. And get the price in writing before they start.

I know CA prices are crazy, but you should be able to get this done for about what I said above, as long as you tell them you just want an oil change and to shove the B service up their ....

Replace engine oil and oil filter

Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS)

As usual, any dealer that doesn't check the laundry list above during a normal oil change visit is worthless. Charging extra for it is exactly why they don't get my business. You can do a better job of checking the above items in your driveway, and then you atleast know it was done - because its a big "if" at the dealer, whether you paid for it or not....
The only time my vehicles go to a dealership are for warranty work. Everything else is done by me or someone else I trust/have determined won't rip me off. For those of you that don't know, on average - more profit stems from the service dept than any of the other dept's at the dealership including sales.....

Followup question...
If someone brings their car for an oil change/tire rotation to a non-dealer (lets say Valvoline instant oil-change center), would they automatically do all those checks as well?

I don't use them for my personal vehicles but have gone with friends as well as taken several of our company cars/vans in.

My answer to your question would be: many check some of the items mentioned but not all. Most will check specific items etc. if you ask, especially if you are one of their frequent/repeat customers. We use the Valvoline shop in town and I believe here they actually rotate and balance tires - additional cost of course. If you like the oil/filter they use and/or bring your own in, these type of shops can be a great alternative to the dealerships to begin a repor with.
