Argh brakes are shot
After 16k miles my brakes have <2mm left. So I called the dealer and they want $214 for the pads itself.
Now I like the bite from the stock brembo's and with the stock wheels I don't really care about brake dust.
From the 30 threads that I actually read through it seems like the general consensus is:
Stock = best bite for all conditions, dusts like hell, and limited squeel
Hawk = same bite, performs like crap when cold, less dust, squeals
EBC red stuff = same to less bite, less dust, eats up stock rotors
Rotora = more bite, but everyone that got those also got new rotors
There are 2 other companies that 2 individuals keep promoting throughout the 30 threads, but there is never any followup from the rest of the community on those.
acuraoemparts and oemacuraparts both dont seem to have the pads for the type s. So, is there somewhere that I can get the pads for less than $214 (including tax) from the dealer?
Thanks in advance

I see you listed different brands but they have many different products with in the brands that are made for our cars. Hawk for example has hps hp+ and ceramic and I assure you they all have different characteristics.

16K? You must drive that thing hard. At 60K, mine look brand new.

I removed my stock pads on my '04 manual TL in late April 2006 at 25170 miles with Rotex Gold Kevlars. I still have the stock pads in my garage and I just now checked them. They have 3/8" pad material remaining with 1/4" of the material beyond the wear indicators. Based on that, I estimate my mileage before replacing the stock pads would have been somewhere between 60000 and 70000 miles. My car has barely under 54000 miles on it now.
The reason I swapped out the stock pads was the dusting. It drove me nuts. Granted the stock pads work beautifully with the Brembo rotors, but the Rotex pads are fine for street use and the dusting has dropped perhaps 80 to 90%.
I did the work myself.

I dont drive it that hard.. some spirited driving on the weekends and stop and go traffic for an hour everyday during the week.
You guys are awesome, thanks Ron. I had the hardest time searching on that site. With the 58 bucks I just saved, I owe you a beer.

My local dealer estimated/quoted $300 plus ($315?, $345?? .... ) to change pads and turn rotors.

Why, yes .... yes he was. You know him? I don't think he's the Lone Ranger either.

Wait a second.
Are you saying that for Front ONLY they are charging $214 for Pads and an additional ~$286 for PAD Installation? With no additional services - rotor turning, brake fluid flush/drain, etc?
If so, that is nothing short of outrageous. So ridiculous it's pathetic. I can't even imagine an UNethical dealer trying to pull something like that. WOW!!

I think I need to get out of this IT business and do "high performance" brake jobs.
I really wish people knew how easy it was... if you can take your tire off, you are like 9/10 there... 1 bolt and it swings up (if I remember correctly, if not 2 bolts).
Okay there are a few more steps than that but NONE of them are hard... Its just a process.

Hawk HPS
I put the Hawk HPS pads on at 28k miles and now have 73k mine only made a little noise the first two weeks, because I didn't turn my rotors ... they have been fine ever since. I will do a complete brake job (front and rear) within the next month slotted rotors, pads, braided lines and a full flush; I will put on new Hawk HPS pads. All DIY for ~ $600
I heard that the Hawk HP Plus pads squeal at light braking ... some people also do not put that anti-squeal gook on the back of the pads at install?!? Who knows, I like mine ...
