Appraisals Vs. Reality - prospective buyer

Just put my TDI to rest and a dream car of mine is, of course, the third-gen TL (S would be nice but no worries really just want the rims). My question for you all is pricing reality vs Kbb/Edmunds/Etc... Vs. the reality of buying a Gen 3. I recently stumbled across a 2004 TL with 51000 miles on it, original owner 6spd Manual (clean too); they are asking 9k, I haggled them down to 8750. Everywhere I look the TL manuals are 7-9k with more miles. Checking KBB or any of the value sites they all say 3-5.5k, is this legit? or am I being stupid and I should jump all over this?

Thanks, guys! Hope I actually get a TL to really join the soiree.

if you found a clean MT 3G TL then be prepare to pay extra premium for it especially if the car has rare exterior and interior combo such as below. I wouldn't trust KBB too much since these car tend to sell fast, use your local market and evaluate yourself to see if it worth the money.

Rare combo found on 3g TL

DGP (deep green) with Carmel interior MT and has navi
WDP (white) with Ebony interior with navi and MT

On Type S you have

KBP (Type S blue) with two tone seat MT
MRP (Red) with two tone seat MT

the market dictates price, not KBB.
what you have is a car that is in demand or rare combo. and the price reflects that.

remember it's only worth what one is willing to pay for it, if others are willing to pay $9k for that car...then dude is gonna keep it until he gets that $9k....or in your case $8750

also remember, people will overvalue their belongings.
Sure, I would LOVE to believe my car could sell for $9k... 06 6MT with navi and black interior....but i'd most likely get $6 or 7k

Curious is 50k miles super low? Locally there is not a TL below 100k. Thanks for the advice guys... Really just looking for a car that's fun to drive luxurious, is under 10000, and is super reliable.. the TL was only sedan that I could think of that fit the bill

you tell me if it's low...
it's a 14 year old car with 50k miles.
Where can you find a 14 year old car with 50k miles? no where, unless it's a barn find. or wrapped up in plastic at a dealer. cars are meant to be driven. the average person puts 15k miles a year.
50k divided by 14 = 3571 miles per year.

...a tore up 3G TL can get 3k. So from what you're describing I'd say your getting a deal. Does it have the OEM A-pec kit by any chance? Also it has low mileage but has 105k service been done? 14 yrs on same timing belt is a lot, Even though car hasn't been driven a ton.

50k miles isn't super low mileage, I had seen TL listed around 11k miles before. mileage mean nothing, I would be looking into service history even with car that has low mileage, if the owner keep up with the maint.

A-pec kit? how do I know?

Also good call on the Timing belt/Water pump; this has not been done. Maintenance records are all there; all oil changes and mileage maintenance done at Acura dealer.

I have absolutely zero evidence of this, but from what I have seen in general the 3G TL has kind of taken a hit in value over the past few years. Especially the 04-06 models. The 07-08 ones still seem sought after.

I shopped for five months for a clean TL 6MT earlier this year; I finally found a very clean and well maintained 2006 with 114,000 miles on the clock and was happy to pay $10,000 for it.

It seems the TLs with automatic transmissions may well have taken a hit in the market over the last few years, but those with manual transmissions are still fetching a high dollar; especially if they're clean and well maintained.

TDI to 3G should be a pretty drastic MPG drop, you okay with that?

give him $8250 and say difference to pay for timing belt service. Kit is lower exterior body molding on bumpers and side skirts.

Then again, if the seller is in no hurry (and it appears he/she isn't), then the $8,750 price is probably the floor. Said another way, I'm betting if the seller waits long enough, he or she will get the car for pretty close to $9,000.

Is this the black/black one in NOVA? If so the timing belt has been done. If I wasn’t set on a Type S I would have bought this one the other day.

No not super low my TLS has 39k but Id definitely say its below average. I think you need to view it and drive it, KBB is a guide but useless with in demand cars (for example value a 993 or e39 m5 etc with KBB).

Have you done your homework on this site for known issues with these cars if so and your comfortable then take next step and view the car, get some seat time and report back.

Good luck!

I don't know why but as soon as you went from Asian Justin to German Justin, I started believing what you were saying. Low mileage it is!

39k. That’s almost brand new. Any chance it’s a 6sp and you want to sell it

dude, that's super low mileage! anything under 10k a year is pretty low in my book. depends on where you live too i guess.

if seats are good, nothing is leaking, exterior is flawless, tranny doesn't grind or anything weird, i'd say $8000 is a good amount i'd be willing to pay. so as long as you plan to keep it for the long run, it should last easily up to 200k and beyond! i can vouch for these cars totally

It was the black on black on in Nova! All records timing belt done. Ended up buying it. Had it for a day, the car itself is amazing condition, engine sounds good, had Acura dealer check it out, no leaks they said it was pristine.

I changed the cabin air filter immediately as it smelled like cigar smoke, I think it helped a lot.. I will say on the uh oh side of things I did notice a feint burning smell from engine, though I think not oil (I've had 2 cars that burn the fk out of oil). I looked all throughout the engine bay and below the car and did not see anything. Previous owner said he had some issues with powersteering pump and air in powersteering lines, wonder if it's a leak? Does that make any sense, not a mechanic heh.

I'll post some pics up later.

about the power steering pump, you can fix by replacing two o-rings which cost about $1.00 and 10 mins of your time. Congrat on the purchase.
