The el42 lacks any kind of sidewall flange to protect the wheel, should you brush the curb when parallel parking. Instead, the wheel gets a rash. What's that flange called, anyway? (Don't tell me "a flange", please.) What good replacement tires (e.g. Pilot Sport AS, Pzero Nero, etc.) have a more useful one? Thanks.

Actually it does have one but the overall maximum sidewall width of the 234/45-17 is only equal to or less than the max outer rim width... Very bad size tire for an 8 inch rim bead. If you replace you need to find a tire with a max sidewall around 9.5 - 10 inches. I think the best would be the Michelin A/S's in a 255/45-17,,, this would get you the right width but would also add 1/2 inch to the overall height. I think the extra height would be fine but have no real proof.... It would also cause minor speedo error..
