All thieves, Die in a fire........

OP, sorry for the inconvenience (you should have beat the hell out of him). But I always think about idiots like this getting a lawyer and sewing the victim (double douche move). Thieves are dumb, but seem to have more rights then the victims.
As for this guy not doing it again, highly unlikely he will quite. Just look at the dumb crook that broke into the frat house, got convicted, spent time in jail, got out and broke in again after getting out of jail! He then got slashed with a sword and died!! Survival of the fittest (in this case, most intelligent). Karma will come around on him, it always does.
GL with the repair on the glass OP.
*Sorry for any rant, I agree with the OP and really don't like cowardly thieves. If some one breaks/steals your property, you should have the right to beat the crap out of them and not get sewed or put in jail for it.

^ are you talking about the dude who broke into that house filled with John Hopkins students.. that was a horrible way to go.. they chopped off one of his hands and sliced him open like a fish, leaving him to bleed to death.

Theft is never a one time offense, it is something someone will do repeatedly and it could have effected many parties. It only takes one time for them to get caught, they spend a short period of time in jail, get out and start doing it again.
When someone breaks into your property (house, car, etc.) it really makes a victim feel vulnerable. You never know when it will happen again.
The OP should have subdued the guy as soon as he pulled him off the bike and had someone call the police. But in rage, one does not always think clearly. We all have the urge to want to hurt someone that has wronged us and you have to refrain from doing harm to them. Sometimes easier said then done, but I feel the OP acted responsibly in this case. Keeping himself out of trouble while still retrieving his GPS.

Yep, sorry, but in my book, he deserved it. Dumb enough to break into the same house, what a third time. Thieves feel they are entitled to things and think they can just take it. I have had the back glass broken out of one truck where I worked, another broke into another truck in my drive way (this actually happened twice to 2 different trucks years apart). I have no sympathy for thieves. The middle east has the right idea, if they steal and get caught, take a hand!

If a guy lunges at me and I have a sword in my hand I'd slice the sucker up too.. I doubt the state will pursue murder charges since he only struck him once and went to get the police.. I'd just rather get shot then try to pull the parts of my body together that are hanging out..

Sorry to hear about that. Could have been worse. If it were me I would have walked out calmly instead of running out. That way the sucker/thief would not have noticed and you would have caught him. I have no sympathy for thieves so once I get my hands on him, all sense of humanity would be out the window. I would be hard pressed to restrain myself from killing that thief in the street.
Thieves never have an ending point as to when they will stop because they can get away with it. Once they get attacked from the victim, he may think twice next time.
My 2 cents.

Haha you're a sav, good stuff. If he was able to get around with both (breaking window, and gps), that would be a loss.
If you claim insurance and say you couldn't recover the GPS, will that be worth it to just pay the deductible and get the glass and a new GPS?

Yeah man, that's next on my list of things to do.
The shop I use really hooked my up though. They let me store the car in their shop that night, and then they fixed it for just the cost of the glass.
