Thanks.
The reason I was asking was that I've narrowed down the field for my next car with the TL leading the list. Today, in a syndicated auto column, Click and Clack, they responded to a letter reporting that a VW Passat had had its engine ruined by going through a relatively small puddle when the water was sucked up through the air intake into the engine. They said that this could happen when the air intake is located low, especially near the wheel wells, if I'm recalling correctly, and that many sleek, sporty cars use this type of design.
Knowing little about the mechanical side of things, I began to worry. I ended up talking to a mechanic friend of mine who advised me that, while it could happen, the chances would be slim. He said that baffles exist which act to prevent it from becoming too much an issue.
Just an anxiety burp on my part.

The oem air intake draws air from next to the battery. So, you would need to submerse your TL in water deep enough the reach the battery (what, maybe 24 inches).
The air is drawn into this cover, highlighted with red arrows next to the battery.

The TL's looking more and more like my kind of car. I'll admit the G35 has my heart aflutter during test drives, but the TL is more comfortable and roomy and it performs quite well itself. The seats on the G35 don't quite feel that great to me, so unless my environmentally conscientious wife gets her way with me getting a hybrid like she has, it looks like my next toy will be the TL. It'll be the best car I've ever owned!!! She does like the fact that Acura's appear to get significantly better mileage than the Infiniti's, especially in terms of real world numbers.
Truly, a sincere thanks to the both of you. Knowing that the air intake isn't riding that close to the ground is a relief.
