After clearing a CEL, what needs to be done before getting an inspection?

I have a CEL (p0420..rear 02 sensor) that pops up every few days or every 50-150 miles. Im pretty sure the rear precat is toast.

I cleared the code with my scanner and drove to get an inspection. I failed the inspection bc the shop said I need to drive "X" amount of miles so the car can register a certain number of drive cycles.

Does anyone know how many miles or drive cycles need to occur before I can go pass the inspection?

I hate to tell you, but I think it is a few days/100ish miles or so before you can get the car emissions tested/inspected.

A CEL light every 50-150 miles though seems like it'd come on pretty often

first you have to fix the problem- the system is made so you cant try to fool it while still having a CEL issue

then its usually 2 weeks driving BUT there is an accellerated method if you must go for emission testing in a few days
Its detailed on azine, I know I pasted it from a gen2 manual a year ago
I remember is was 30 minutes freeway drive without cruise control- different speeds and decels, then city drive with speeds at 5 minute segments- accel decel...
teaching it everything it will normally go thru on months drive

get the codes read at parts store and report back- compare them to your scanner.. which said what??
then we can help you if its an O2 sensor prob or you have a precat delete or what is needed

why do you suspect a cat prob?

^I changed the 02 sensor that the cel was referring to (p0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)) in hopes that it was a faulty sensor. The cel didnt come back for a little while but eventually it did. That leads me to believe the rear cat is toasted. I have 119k miles and hit wot atleast once a day.

Heres the other dilemma. On thursday morning Im dropping my car off to get J&R's turbo installed. So that means no more cats. I wanted to get my inspection done before I went to the install so I had another year before I had to come up with another solution.

Found this for 96 tl...seems like a lot of work lol

Step 1
(Engine Cold) Start engine, idle 20 seconds. Accelerate gradually and drive at 20-25 mph for 1 minute, varying speed.

Step 2
Accelerate gradually to 32 mph within 35 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 10 seconds. Idle for 40 seconds.

Step 3
Accelerate at part throttle to 25 mph in 10 seconds. Cruise at 17-25 mph for 15 seconds. Accelerate gradually to 57 mph in 45 seconds. Cruise at 50-56 mph for 1 minute. Decelerate gradually to 0 mph in 40 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.

Step 4
Accelerate at part throttle to 36 mph and maintain for 10 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 15 seconds. Idle for 5 seconds.

Step 5
Accelerate to 30 mph and back to 0 mph within 30 seconds. Idle for 20 seconds.

Step 6
Accelerate to 36 mph in 20 seconds. Drive at 35 mph for 20 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 15 seconds. Idle 5 seconds.

Step 7
Accelerate gradually to 26 mph and decelerate to 0 within 40 seconds. Idle 15 seconds.

Step 8
Accelerate to 27 mph in 40 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 10 seconds. Idle 25 seconds.

Step 9
Accelerate to 26 mph in 15 seconds, maintain speed for 10 seconds, decelerate to 0 mph in 10 seconds. Idle 15 seconds.

Step 10
Accelerate to 23 mph in 20 seconds, decelerate to 0.5 mph in 10 seconds (no complete stop). Accelerate to 28 mph and back to 0 mph (momentary stop 1 second) within 35 seconds.

Step 11
Accelerate gradually to 34 mph in 45 seconds. Vary speed between 34 and 19 mph for 2 minutes. Decelerate from 25 to 0 mph in 25 seconds. Idle for 5 seconds.

Step 12
Accelerate to 29 mph in 15 seconds, decelerate gradually to 0 mph in 45 seconds. Idle for 30 seconds.

Step 13
Accelerate gradually to 28 mph and back to 0 mph (momentary stop 1 second) within 50 seconds. Accelerate gradually to 27 mph and back to 0 mph within 55 seconds. Idle for 15 seconds.

Step 14
Accelerate to 24 mph and back to 0 mph within 18 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds. Accelerate gradually to 22 mph and back to 0 mph within 50 seconds. Idle for 8 seconds.

Step 15
Accelerate gradually to 30 mph within 50 seconds. Decelerate to 0 mph in 10 seconds. Idle for 25 seconds.

Step 16
Accelerate to 23 mph and back to 0 mph within 30 seconds. Idle for 10 seconds.

Step 17
Repeat steps 1 - 16 once again. Recheck the status of the "Readiness Monitors".
