I thought that the exhaust manifolds were cast right in the block, therefore there would be no need for exhaust manifold gaskets.

MB - Thanks for posting all this great info today! (including your other posts)

Does the manual you are getting these from include any tourque specs or more detailed pics? Also, where did you get it? Can we just pick it up in our local Acura service dept?

Good job and Thanks!

No....it is just a service advisors "for dummies" manual more or less that they use to explain to customers what needs to be done to their car when they dont know what they are talking about. So....there is no torque specs or anything in it. I do have a regular service manual though?

Ya....that is one they missed....dont believe there is a gasket. But hey...they still have mistakes on their web site for the TL options also....It is a good "general" reference tool though and did come straight from the Acura dealer. They use this material in this Acura Service Consultant Technical Guide book, I am sure, to explain to newbies and ladies whats what when they are in service. Ought to work here too....

J32A_ are SOHC VTEC's. Picture does show SOHC. Camshaft lobes are on the middle camshaft. It hits the rockers, that hit actuators on two ballancing cams which in fact actuate the valves.

Like rbf mentioned, its from the old TL, 99 to be exact (J32A1) or it coud be a J30A1 they look almost identical.

But like you said its for people who don't know what the parts are so minor differences won't really matter.

Acura Service better hope they don't get a customer requesting this:

Service Manager: "Sir, based on my technician's diagnosis of your overheated engine, it looks like we'll have to overhaul it."

Customer: "Oh man..., that sounds very bad. So what needs to be done?"

Service Manager: "Here, let me show you our 'Service Consultant Illustrated Technical Guide'." [Opens book to page shown above] "We will have to dismantle the engine and replace the valves, valve springs, and pistons, among other things." [Points to each respective part]

Customer: "Well, I don't like green. Do you have pistons in any other color?"

No...it has a timing belt. Part#14400-RCA-A01 (04-05). The parts# reference guide that I have only goes up to 05...but I bet 06 is the same too.

Part#14400-RCA-A01 (04-05) ALL

You're correct with both sides of your question. Generally speaking, two cams per head are better than one because you can better tune the intake and exhaust valve timing and opening when they have their own camshafts doing this.

But Honda/Acura has made excellent power output from their SOHC designs. So has Ford, BMW, and some others. However, the move is, and has been, towards DOHC in performance engines.

Due to a MIL light coming on, I took my 06 TL in for repair. Tech read on the HDS scanner that code P0304, #4 cylinder misfire was set. Dealer technician first swapped ignition coils from #4 and #5 cylinder, but code was still set on #4. Then he swapped #4 and 5 fuel injectors, and misfire code followed to #5 cylinder. Changed #5 injector and misfire code did not return after several dealer test drives over 2 days. One thing I forgot to ask at the shop was the location of the cylinder/injector numbers. Are the # 4 and 5 cylinders on the front or rear bank of heads? I own the 04 TL shop manual and I can't find this info in it anywhere, under the hood and even searching Acurazine and the web. Anyone know?

It's usually odds and evens. Odd numbers on one side of the block and even numbers on the other. Not sure which is which on our motor.
