Acura TL Windshield Repair
I received a quarter sized star crack on my windshield from a rock on the freeway last week. The star turned into an 18" long crack a few days later. I was shocked to hear that a new windshield was over $700 from the dealer. The total price to repair the windshield is over $1K. Replacing my 1994 Civic windshield cost me only $200. I'm glad my insurance deductable is only $100. Windshield technology must have really changed.....

not really- you just got the dealer price- which is jacked up since they have a glass shop do the job and tack on profit for doing nothing
Call around to certified glass shops
should be 350-450 for glass installed
When insurance in involved everyone jacks the price up double

yea, it's around that from a dealer or any certified shop IF YOU WANT OEM GLASS, if not it should be no more than 400 installed. i know cuz mine got a long crack from a rock too. i have glass insurance on my policy which has a $50 deductible. my insurance wanted to give me aftermarket glass at first. since i was only paying $50 i told them i wanted OEM glass. might want to change your policy, in case something like this ever happens again.
i learned my lesson after this happened to my first car. paid out of pocket https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135205

^ Same shit had happened to me on my '01 Accord. I was on the phone with a friend that was driving behind me and I heard a loud bang. That's when my friend had told me that he had seen someone throw something down from the over pass.
Right now, I have a crack on my current car and luckily, it hasn't spider webbed. However, my glass is so pitted, I might as well see if I can get a new windshield installed. I believe my windshield is covered under full coverage.

comprehensive -full coverage insurance normally has glass coverage- with a varying deduct- depending on what you picked
If its 250 or 500 deduct----cash is your friend at a private shop
OEM is good glass, AND- the glass everyone uses aftermarket ( there is always a awarehouse the glass shops all use) is certified- has a tint band- fits and works perfect... until the next thing of lifes dangers gets it in a few years.

In some states like Florida, there is no deductable. Covered 100%. I happened to my minivan twice. Last time I was on the freeway and something large and hard hit my windshield on the passenger side, smashing the whole side. I had a new windshield install the next day. Insurance took care of everhything. Good luck.

I had the same problem, but luckily I ran it to a glass place and was able to have them fill it the next day.
It looks crappy - I was hoping it'd magically seal the hole but the surface is pretty inconsistent. But I guess it's better than a new windshield.
Given how easily it seemed to crack (compared to my last Nissan which took a ton of major rocks and never gave more than a little pencil tip sized crack) I'm questioning if I won't have to replace it in another year or two anyways.

I wish more states would require Insurance companies to pay 100% for a new windshield. Especially the states that have vehicle nispections like VA where if the window is cracked you will fail the inspection. My widow got cracked in VA and the insurance company would only cover past my deductible of $500. I wish i had a lower deductible, but with a few tickets under my belt it would shoot the cost up even more than what it already is.

the TL's windsheild is more expensive due to a few reasons:
It's acoustic glass, theres some sort of gas inside the middle of it to reduce noise.
The glass is stronger as it also keeps the front of the car from flexing, thats why no firewall braces were added to the strut bar like in the TSX

Needs wheels
The windshield is so expensive because it has a sound barrier built onto it. The acura glass is about 200 - 300 more than reputable aftermarket glass (from autolite for example), but may affect resale. If you are only paying the deductable, insist on acura glass. Mine was 925 installed for the acura windshield.

That special "Acura" glass may dampen sound, but it sure is soft. Mine not only has a fat spider chip in it (filled by Novus), but it also is starting to get pitted. The slightest pebble will leave a small pit mark on the surface. Considering the rake on the windshield, it is not really resisting any impacts like my aftermarket glass was on my previous Integra.
I'm not sure if I want another OEM windshield because of how fragile it has proved to be.

I concur with the softness. 2007 MDX purchased Oct 2006. Crack along the bottom of the windshield by Jun 2007. 2007 TL purchased July 2007. Star 1 by April 2008, star 2 arrived yesterday from a pebble that did not seem like it hit hard what's so ever and should not have left a star imho. I've seen many other MDX with the same cracks and I thought it was some type of defect. I really do think the OEM glass is definitely more prone to damage then other vehicles.
