Acura Certification Questions, DOOPED???
Got a 2006 TL navi last week. However, I noticed a couple of things that were a little off to me while giving it a good bath this weekend.
1. Looks like there was some masking around the driver rear door handle as if the door was painted again.
2. The tires are new, but are some brand called sumitomo HTR+.
If i read the Cert inspection list, these two conditions are not allowed for certified acuras.
Any suggestions, also i was sold the 7yr/100,000 warranty for around $1500. Does that sound normal from Acura?
I dont want to list the dealer at this time, but I had read good reviews and they are well known through out my state.

CPO is an inspection process- it does not guarantee a perfect car or perfect maitenance history
If the tires are worn below a certain depth then they are replaced with the stock brand tire from dealer
If they are ok,,,they stay on
Paintwork-crash damage- as long as not visable frame damage they are not looking for bondo or other probs in paint
Always inspect the car before accepting it- in daylight and washed so you can spot this kind of thing
normal price for the 7/100

Here's the skinny from the Acura CPO 150 Point Checklist:
Tires:
11 Tires (minimum tread depth 5/32 across tread width)
64 Tires (OEM size, speed and load rating/ matching brand and type)
65 Tires (No road hazard damage/proper tire pressure)
66 Tires (Check for uneven wear or sidewall cracking)
Body:
4 Carefully inspect unibody for signs of damage or prior repairs
135 LR door (finish, trim)
http://www.acura.com/content/pdf/CPO_150pt.pdf
As you can see, there is no stipulation as to the brand of tires on the car, just as long as they are matching and meet the speed rating of the OE tires. Yes, they are crappy tires.
Body work or body repairs fall in the same category. No structural damage, and fit and finish must be up to standards.
$1500 may be a little high, but too late now.

Thanks for the info. I was miss reading the checklist, to me that tire one read OEM matching tires. So no problem there. As far as body damage, it is not that bad and was hard to find so I am not upset. I just thought I also remember him saying that certified cars cannot be in an accident in order to be certified.
We love the car other than that.
Is there a standard price on that warranty or is it based on millage? Ours has 45k on it.

i also just bought a TL (07) about a month ago, so no expert here, but I think they just start really high on the warranty and go down. Our first offer was a whopping 2050. I said no thanks. Then since we had to wait a little while to do all the paperwork and was "patient" they offered 1550. Nope again. Finally came back with an "at cost" offer of 1050 and I took it. Not sure if it was still to high, but I thought it was decent compared to the 1800 I paid for my tahoe and blazer warranties. gl

Personally I think "CPO" sometimes borders on scam.
I think there are some dealers who do a poor job of inspection/certification (if they do it at all) just raise the price. They are betting on the buyer not having problems that have to be covered under the CPO warranty.
IOW - let the buyer beware. Protect your own interests and don't ONLY rely on the dealer.

My CPO has obviously had minor bumper damage at one time. The clearcoat on the rear bumper is a tad weak. Couldn't see it when I bought it since it was raining for about a week here and it looked like water spots. My tires were brand new EL42, new brakes, new floor mats, and they touched up the handful of nicks/scratches. I got offered the 7/100k for 1800 and finally they came down to 1050 and I still told them no (looking back, I should have taken it but oh well).

I got this one at McGrath in the Chicago area.
I was happy with the service and they did work hard on the sale. Price wise they were 2k below everyone in within 200 miles. Maybe I know why
Anyway, I guess I was spoiled as the vehicle I turned in was a leased new 2007 pilot and i did not have to worry about inspecting.
Maybe I was just hoping that a luxury name would have a little higher standard than your domestic/base dealers for getting pre-owned cars cleaned up.
***BUYING NOTE****
DO NOT TAKE YOUR KID WITH YOU WHEN BUYING! THAT MAY DISTRACT YOUR ABILITY TO LOOK AT A CAR

Are the vin number at least still on the door jams, trunk, bumpers. Major body parts basically should have a vin unless it has been replace, other wise its probably something minor? When i bought my cpo i can definitely tell the rear bumper has been repainted because they have taped over the vin number and repainted it but the vin is still there so i just took it as it probably had minor scratches or whatever and they just had to repaint the whole bumper instead. Atleast its still the original bumper? Will acura cpo a car that has missing vin numbers?

Burning Brakes
I tend to be very skeptical about this cpo business, but I expect each dealer does it differently. E.g. some might not even do an oil change or check the air filter. No big deal. When I bought my TL (and also when I bought my F150) I had the dealership put the vehicle up on the hoist in their shop and I inspected it from underneath. I know what to look for. Even then, not every problem will be visible. The Acura dealer was nice enough to have one of the techs answer all my questions. Excellent process.
