Its bogus in doing anything for gas mileage according to the Environmental Protection Agency
As for damage; Buy a small can at a paint store, build n save or home depot. Put the Acetone in a glass then put some scrap rubber & plastic in the glass. After a short time I do not think you will want it in your fuel system or anywhere near your car.

Pure acetone on rubber will "dry" some fuel system rubber components. problematic for older vehicles (I mean old too)..... with most cars fuel systems designed to handle some form of gas with an ethanol blend you should be ok.
However, it is an old trick used by many tuners looking for a quick and easy way to increase the octane of your gas. Look up topics on Acetone, Toulene, or Xylene.
Personally I would look less at additives as you would probably see the biggest gains by adjusting your driving style.

Acetone is better known as nail polish remover and is very corrosive on non-metal hoses in the drivetrain. Snopes shows that there has been no "observable" effect by any scientific method but everyone wants a "silver bullet". Until the Hydroxy craze started, acetone was the #1 hype. A buddy of mine even "invested" something like $5K into a company that sells it as an additive to governments. The "pitch" was that as fuel prices increased, people would pay substantial sums for this additive. I warned him about it at the at time (over 4 years ago) but he didn't listen. Of course, he hasn't seen a dime in return even though we have nearly twice the price of gasoline.

I dont know about drying rubber parts up, but somebody submerged a rubber seal in acetone and watched it swell up quite a bit.
