About to buy a 2008 TL w/Navi

The dealer is asking $24k (and not budging) with about $1350 in fees, taxes, and title. They offered to buy my hunk of junk 99 TL with tranny problems among a host of other issues. I could probably sell the 99 TL on CL for $1k at the most, it's on its last leg. They offered $2500 for trade in. So out the door I'm looking at $22,850 with 2.9% APR for 5 years on a certified pre-owned car

The 08 TL has 30k miles, navi, and is certified pre-owned. Carfax did report an accident where the previous owner rear ended another car. I checked out the front end and see no remnants of the accident. Other than that, Carfax reported all scheduled maintenance and was otherwise clean.

What do you guys think? Should I buy it? BTW it's black on black. Tire tread is a little lower than I prefer.

Were the airbags deployed when the car was in the accident? for comparison purposes, I just bought a certified pre-owned 2008 TL Type-S, auto with navi with 50k miles for $23k and it had a clear carfax. i also got a bumper to bumper extended warranty for the car through 2016 or 120k miles. 24k seems like a bit much to me to be honest.

*edit* - before I bought the car, new brakes and tires were put on the car as well.

No the airbags were not deployed. I think the big selling point for me is the trade-in offer. For reference, a Hyundai dealership offered me $1k for trade-in.

Most Type-S's in my area are over $27k...

well I traded in my 2003 TLS when buying this car. Like you, the trans was on it's way out again, it had 140k miles on it and was in an accident where the airbags deployed. Most cars over 10 years old will be wholesaled out and sold at auction. The dealer is probably offering you more for your trade in because they are making up for it on the sale of a CPO car. there's always a reason.

That's a good point. What do you think of an '07 Type-S with 56k miles for $22,600? It's got a clean Carfax.

Dealers will let 07's go cheaper, because of the warranty difference versus the 08's. (unless, you can negotiate an extended warranty). Just be firm with your numbers... if you have to travel a bit to get a great car, do it. I was just lucky to find a great deal on a great car.

That doesn't sound like a bad deal for the 07 @ 22.6k, you'd probably be able to talk them down a bit as well. Remember, they aren't making money on cars that sit in the parking lot. As long as you're realistic with your numbers, you should have no problem negotiating. do you have a link to this TLS?

I guess i depends which state you live in, but dealers add appx. $2k on top of the car when they buy it at an auction/ trade in, then another $2k when they certify it. I would go to a smaller dealer that doesnt certify it, and get it for cheaper, and add extended warranty on it instead.

Ive seen an 08 tl with 30k nav, go for about 17k-18k at the dealers auction...so do the math..i think hes asking too much...

I picked up my 07 type s about a year and half ago for $24k with 29k on the odo. But I also searched for months to find the perfect one! Traveling to find the perfect one is the way to go. Look at a ton of them before you make your decision unless one speaks to you and let's you know I'm the one!

Fianancing rates are pretty low everywhere now too! 2.9% on a used car is damn good!

I would not pay that much for one that does not have a clean Carfax. Keep shopping.

Not to mention, they're not following their 150pt inspection checklist if they're allowing worn tires to stay on a CPO.

It's listed on point 11: Tires (minimum tread depth 5/32 across tread width)

I'm about to pick up a CPO '07 CBP Type-S in NY this weekend. The deals are out there, but you have to keep looking and willing to travel. What are you looking for? MT or AT? If AT, they're a dime a dozen whereas a MT is really hard to find. It's down to 23 MTs Type-S in the nation right now.

How much is your car worth on kbb? and the value for the 08 TL on KBB? the thing is they can offer you more for your car because they are holding gross on the 07 TL...

meaning they will show that they are giving you more for your car, but the profit on the 08 TL probably more than justifies what they are offering you for your car..

LOL, I just tried to do a KBB valuation and it said they do not provide values for cars in this condition. As I had mentioned, it's in bad shape. I would be lucky to get $1k for it in a private sale.

What do you guys think of an 08 CPO with 50k miles, clean Carfax, for $22,500?

Keep looking. I think you should be in closer to $21,500 for those miles.

I got an 08 Non Navi with 72K for a lot less than that.

^ Damn, that's low! Why are they selling ATs cheaper than MTs? I thought MTs were harder to move so they would make those lower and not the other way around.

Not near me. The MT's always go for more. They are hard to find.

Regular TL with navi. Carfax is clean. If they give me $2500 for my trade-in, which is honestly about to die, should I go for it?

If you're trade is about to die then it's not incredibly bad. Personally I would try to get another $750-$1000 off it. Spend the weekend looking. See if there is something with less miles out there. The last thing you want is to buy a car quickly and then regret it later.

The ultimate decision is yours to make... it's not a bad deal considering your trade in

Well unfortunately I was a little too late. The car is currently out with a potential customer overnight. The salesman said he would let me know if it is finalized tomorrow. Not sure if I want to go for it now though... I don't remember buying a car being so stressful.

you'll know when it's the right car at the right time at the right price. You'll most likely test drive it and buy it on the spot. Remember, even if you have to travel a bit to get a good price on a CPO car, it's worth it!!

can you provide more details on your 1999 TL, like how many miles, and is tranny slip obvious? Any change you may sell it on craigslist? There is no way that a used TL, regardless of the shape, is to drop in price below 3 grand. Dealer do, and will low ball you on the trade. Sell privately and look for a better deal from the dealer.

Its in really bad shape. Missing front dome light assy, navi is broken, paint is peeling, tranny is very obviously slipping, brakes and rotors need replaced, parking brake is rubbing, right passenger door handle is inop, and a few other small details.

Buying the white tl now...
