9.9 Mpg
Still getting horrible gas mileage on my new TL. Its an automatic...I am driving in town, very conservatively as well. I thought my mileage would be better by now. I have almost 1200 miles on my car. When i first got it, i was getting 13 MPG. I filled up today and calculated 9.9 MPG. Whats goin on?

TOTALY kidding!!
Do you do a lot of stop and go - as in constantly? Even when I have driven completely city miles my average was still around 19+. Have you had it on an "all" highway trip yet to calculate that phase? If something was mechanically wrong one would assume it would get poor mileage on the open road as well.
9.9 is definitely something to be questioning...
Seriously, I was joking about your math capabilities.

I have a new TL also, and I average around 13-15 mpg in the city with slow to average traffic. If I know I am going to drive on the highway for one hour, I usually reset my trip computer.and my mpg rises to 25-26. I know my car can do better when the mileage goes above 1000 (I only have 350 now).

You need to calculate your mileage manually and reset the the mileage gage after each tank. Also, look at your average MPH which I find is very related to MPG average.
I do lots of stop & go with maeby 10-15% highway, usually get between 15 and 16 MPG and average 18 MPH per the mid. On my rare full tank highway trips I might average 60-75 MPH and get 26-30 MPG.

9.9m mpg do you like punching the gas and slaming the brakes and driving like ur in NASCAR? If not, i think it would be a good idea to tell your dealer about it as soon as possible. My wild guess could is that there is something blocking the air intake, like a pretty clogged filter. Maybe the gas in your area has more than 10% methanol in it

On trips I get as much as 31MPG but even in the city I average 23MPG but also average over 35MPH. Are you trying to use REGULAR fuel? Because a LOT of people thought that they could save money and tried using regular (instead of the recommended Premium) and got REALLY sucky mileage. If your skimping, try doing it again but this time with the RIGHT fuel for this car. Beclieve it or not, you will get better fuel economy with premium that MORE than makes up for the measley 20-cent a gallon difference. Did you buy this new or used? If used, the air filter congetion is a good suggestion. Replace it. Something like $25 @ NAPA,right?

I'm pretty much on par with you. Last time I filled up 10 gallons on the head and I was at 181.5 for mileage from the last fill up. I am about 95% city, I only live about 4 miles from school, so the car doesn't even really have a chance to warm up by the time I get to campus.
I need a moped.

ouch! sorry to hear about your mpg issue. well, lately, when i drive conservatively in the city, i get around 21-23 mpg with my 6speed (no joke). only sacrifice i made was no a/c, and it's not too bad here in san diego.
hope you can figure out something with your gas :/

My last two tanks of gas have been city only driving. Havent been on the freeway once. Getting about 18mpg, though there is very little stop and go with city traffic. I'd imagine it would be lower, but not 8 mpg lower.

I drive the infamous 101 in LA everyday and by all accounts I drive like an asshole, and I still pull 18 mpg. If I drive calmly and nicely I can hit 21 in traffic, and on trips I pull 25-28 even with excessive right pedal. Either something is wrong or you get really, really bad mpg. Just rolled 5000 miles in 4 months

I dont think its too much to worry about. You are still burning off fuel at the same rate as if you were cruising more or less depending on your engine speed, you're just getting less miles out of it. If you're stuck in stop and go traffic, of course your MPG will shoot down. You're hardly moving. You get 0mpg when youre just sitting there letting the car idle. Cruising at a steady speed will get you a mpg reading thats actually meaningful.

San Diego's traffic is pretty much shit. When I leave my day job to go to my evening job it is 15 miles away. It normally takes 45minutes to get there and is 10-15 mph all the way there and get around 25mpg on those days. Days that I don't hit traffic I play alittle with the gas and get around 16mpg

9.9 just absolutely sounds to me like something is wrong. I mean, I don't see how you could get that low, unless you're spending hours a days idling.
I get over 21 scooting around town, and close to 30 on the highway. If I got 9.9, I'd be visiting the dealer for a checkup.

Like almost everybody else, my opinion is that something is wrong. You should have the dealership check it out. 85% of my driving is city driving and I'm getting 21-22. When I hit the highway for an extended period of time, I'm closer to 30. Definitely get that checked out.

Do you use sport shift and are stuck in 1st and 2nd most of the time?
1. Check to see if it's not in auto mode. (I really doubt it but just in case).
2. Check your filter
3. Check if intake is blocked or something
I get between 24-31 on my 6mt on the basis of driving highway and city.

How can you get less than 10 mpg? Are you measuring the display or when you fill up at the pump? If you are a conservative driver you should be getting at a minimum 20 mpg in city driving and 25+ highway. I've had my TL for 2 years now, drive fairly conservative and get 34 highway (no A/C running) and 25 city. Using 89 octane and have had 2 oil changes during 21,000 miles. Nothing else.

sorrry..a very noob question. people here are mentioning about resetting the trip computer to recalculate the mpg. are you talking about resetting Trip A or Trip B to 0 miles??
Does the average mpg/mph and all that information refer to Trip A or Trip B?

Hold down the reset button to zero out the Trip Computer average numbers.
Hopefully you're not getting 15 mpg or worse, as that would be horribly atypical and would require visit to the dealer. G/L!

i understand that one can calculate mpg from doing Trip A miles/gallons you filled, but in our trip comp there is a section where it displays the total time you've drive, average mpg, average speed, and etc.
can we use the mpg from that display to check mpg? or does everyone do the calculation manually?
thanks

ahhh i see, i guess the Trip Computer display information does not refer to Trip A or B in particular but the overall, and since you mentioned that we can reset that entire display of information, it shud be able to do the mpg calculation for me...going to try it out after i leave office

im using premium gasoline from shell....the way i calculate is fill up, divide the number of miles driven by the amount of fuel i put in the tank. i reset the trip computer each time. i realize the trip computer is just an average, but these figures are from the actual amoput of fuel i put in, vs the amout of miles i drove using that much gas...

Personally, I think if you're getting 9.9, one of the sensors must be acting up, causing the car to run way rich or something.
Even in my other car (Grand Prix GTP with a supercharger sitting on a 3.8 litre engine), the fuel economy only drops to 10mpg when I'm at WOT at maximum boost.
I remember resetting the guage while I was sittingin traffic. Even when I was moving no faster than 10mph, the information thing said I was averaging around 15-17mpg. And when I got home, it was at 19-21mpg. If I let it go for a couple days, it will settle at 24mpg.

Again I'll say to all...check your average MPH in the MID along with your MPG. They are related. What everyone considers 'city traffic' varies.
With me averaging 18 MPH, it explains my 16 MPG average.

Not sure if this was already said.. to me, all that matters is how far I can drive on a full tank. I seem to be getting 300 miles til I get the yellow gas light. It also matters how often you have to refill. If I see it drop under 200 miles a tank, then I'd get worried.
