So the past week ive been doing my homework and decided to go with the 3x3 oem fluid change and end it off with GM syncromesh fluid , witch seemed to be the most popular fluid for the 6mt.. but i saw a diy on here to replace the tranny filter for auto but when i went to the honda dealer for the filter they said that they couldnt find the part, & that most manuals have intergrated filters, just auto's have the replaceable filters, is this true? i just wanted to clairify before i go to the acual acura dealer witch is a 30 mile trip from me..

 

The 3x3 is for the auto as well. The manual just drain and fill. Not aware of a filter on the manual either.

 

04-06 5AT have the external filter that can be easily replaced. Doesn't apply to 04-06 6MT and all 07-08 AT/MT. The 07-08 AT have some sort of internal filter...not sure how hard that is to replace. Might have to drop the trans to get to it.

Also a good point made below. A 3x3 change is for the AT due to where fluid is retained and simply cannot be drained out, so multiple drains assist with getting new fluid mixed in. MT shouldn't need this.

 

I am a bit confused with your question. If you did your homework correctly as your claimed, you would realise the 3x3 isn't necessary for our 6MT. The GM fluid isn't cheap...to do a 3x3 would be a waste of your time and money.

I've never heard of anyone replacing the filter for the MT TL. Are you experiencing a problem with your tranny? If you're thinking of doing a filter change as a preventive measure, I recommend you get the GM fluid, do the fluid change and call it a day.

 

nothing is wrong with it but it with 165 k on the odometer and counting i just wanted to keep up with all the maintence.. i bought 3 quartz of GM fluid and was gonna do the 3x3 with oem fluid but i guess i can get my $45s back.. as its for my first change i didnt know alot about this and the posts i read where mainly on auto's, there wasnt many for the 6mt change.. #noobie .. :-/ thnx for the info tho just wanted to clairify..

 

Errr hold on....You bought 3 quarts for a 3x3 flush? Unless my math is incorrect, it sounded like you were going to do each flush with 1qt of fluid, which if you actually needed to do a flush, I believe you'd need 9 qts.

You'll still need the 3 qts for the drain and fill, you just won't need 9 qts for a 3x3 flush. I really hope you didn't just put in 1 qt for the drain and fill...

No offense but it appears you didn't do your "homework" very well. So tell what procedure you plan to use for draining and refilling your MT and we'll grade your assignment.

Hint - It involves no filters, nothing whatsoever to measure any amount of MTF going back in, and there will be left over MTF.

You did get the "Friction Modified" GM Synchromesh fluid, right?

 

yee, friction modifed, so tomorrows plans are plain out, remove drain/fill bolts with new washers on hand, after the drain install new drain plug and add approximately 2.3 qtz of gm. seems pretty straight forward, correct me if im worng.

 

Close enough ... I usually like to remove the fill level plug and fill until I see some coming out of it but others are fine with just estimating the 2.3. My way requires the car to be dead level so that's a pain for some.

PS -for the removal of the cover/underwork I like to spray the plastic fasteners with silicone spray before trying to pull back the center expander pins. Seems to help. Haven't broken one yet
Sorry if I came off like a jerk but there's been some guys messing up things lately so it was the easiest way to see what you knew.

 

If I'm not mistaken, 6MT's don't have removable transmission filters like the AT models do.

Also, try to avoid the local Acura dealers. Most don't know an o-ring from a wedding ring from my experience. Best luck I've had in San Diego with a good shop is H&A II off of Miramar Road.
