6MT - GM MTF and Shipping

Hey all!

Another GMSMFM fluid question but not your typical one.

I tried to order this potion from gmpartonline.net and got an email stating my order was cancelled due to hazmat concerns with shipping the fluid.

How did you guys manage to get it shipped to you?? I had trouble finding it locally which is why I went the online route but as you can see, it's going as smooth as my shift to 3rd.

Does anyone know which gm vehicles use this stuff?

No problems shipping 6qts to me via UPS.

Are you in Cananda? What shipping method? If it was USPS, then that probably explains it.

Any manual tranny car. If in doubt, say you own a 'vette.

as said others have gotten it no issues, and considering that they should have done it multiples times before for shipping, should have been no issues with it (and they have to ship it to the dealers anyways )

you are probably in Canada. They don't ship stuff like that. But I am sure if you went to a GM dealership and asked for it they would find you some. It's also owned by AC DELCO company so google AC DELCO synchromesh friction modified. I got some from a Chevy dealership

and even then they should be able to order some up, if they don't have it in stock)

Im in nyc. I actually just called them to see if there was anything they could do to get it shipped b/c others had no issue. After getting transferred twice, the guy I spoke with said that they (i assume that means shipping regs) recently (within the past month) got strict with shipping the fluid. Strange.

I'm in nyc too. It took a few days of chasing them down for a follow up to find that they cancelled my order too. Jeez I was waiting 2 weeks for this =/

Looks like this is a packaging issue, not a change in Hazmat definitions. The IATA packaging rules for Hazmat changed 1 Jan 11. From what I can gather, a "rigid" package is now required (i.e. cardboard box no longer acceptable).

I'm guessing that they (gmpartsonline.net) have not yet come up with a packaging format to meet these new requirement and therefore UPS is refusing shipment.....(however, there is supposedly a 90-day grace period until 31 Mar)...

I'm a GM fan/owner by nature, (and Acura owner here recently)...pretty aweseome they make stuff thats better than Honda's MT fluid. You'd think Honda would throw money at GM to get the chemical ingredients and label their own MTF with it, or have a merger on it at least...gm has always had high standards for their DEXRON ATF for years and kept improving it, so i guess naturally their MTF would be great too...Preciate.

Honda/Acura is no different that any other car manufacturer in that they also make mistakes, market sub-quality products, and have problems as well. Heck, look at their on-going problems with both their manual and automatic transmission, their clutch (overly complex), and their incessant obsession with building interference engines. Where some companies shine, others falter.

some manufactures have there strong points (ie: honda making strong/powerful 4 cylinders), and then they also got their weak points too

some manufactures just happen to have more weak points then others or strong points (ie: domestics)

This is true. However, Ford is now leading both Toyota and Honda and am I happy about that. I love it when the various manufacturers take a loolk in their rear view mirror and realize someone is on the butts and ready to take first place. Competition improves the breed and serves consumers.\

Incidentally, my post #17 was not intended to bash Honda/Acura. It's just that I'm a realist and see where some mistakes have been made. I still very much enjoy my '04 manual TL.

i would not say that so much, especially once you start putting 100k+ miles on the vehicle (so maybe in initial quality; let alone Ford like to do things some wierd ass ways when designing things)

as far as bashing Honda/Acura; no worries i know they have there weak points just like every other manufacture; just like Toyota being bashed by the media for those gas pedal issues, BUT when a domestic has a recall that size (or even a million+ sized recall), it's only mentioned, and not blown out of proportion like they did to Toyota

So I was trying to follow up with my refund from gmparts knowing that they didn't process anything yet. I told them that I was aware that GM's packaging needed to be changed in accordance to the hazmat policy and asked if this fluid is something they will be able to ship out in the foreseeable future. Their responses:

"LET ME FIND OUT IF THERE IS A WAY TO GET THESE OUT TO YOU. THANKS JAVI"

"I WILL HAVE THESE FLUIDS SHIP TO YOU TODAY. WILL SEND A TRAC# ASAP. THANK YOU VINNY."

"THEY ARE GETTING YOUR PARTS READY TO SHIP OUT. THANKS ONCE AGAIN"

I'm not sure if this is just their reaction for holding my money for 3 weeks already with no refund, but hopefully it is their long term solution. Now I just have to wait on a valid tracking number.

I tried to find this at local dealers, but all of them want me to order a whole case for $168!

I got it shipped to me in NJ no problem. It arrived just yesterday. Can't wait for a nice weekend so I can do this. That reminds me, I need to get the crush washer(s).

I'm guessing either they changed the packaging or realized they have a 90-day grace period. Let us know what the packaging is when you get it.

It was in a cardboard box, each quart was in its own plastic shopping bag tied shut, and there was good packaging/reinforcement inside the box.

Yeah I was actually quite impressed with the shipping! Each bottle was also sealed around/over the cap with shrinkwrap plastic stuff. Maybe they come from GM that way, I don't know.

when i ordered mine like in august of last year, the 3 bottles were just in a box with packaging peanuts.

so, I think they did find a creative way to ship the hazardous liquid.

I used my work address in NJ to ship it to. It feels more probable that they just dropped the ball on my order and then on the refund. Thankfully I'm not in a rush for this.

For anyone in nyc, I ended up finding it at HB Chevrolet on queens blvd. All other dealerships said they didn't stock it and I would need to order in bulk.

Also in NYC, if you happen to call Villa Marin GM in Staten Island, they'll tell you there's 10 in stock. After a far trip, I found the wrong part number was assigned.

Finally got it in the mail today. They taped the caps, double bagged it, double knotted it, double boxed it and double stuffed it with newspapers dated the first day I ordered it in January.

Why is everyone ordering 5,6,7 quarts? Is it necessary to do a 2x or 3x drain & fill?

I assume it's because there was/is a rumor going around that the fluid is being discontinued, plus at least one of the vendors has/had a 6 qt minimum.

No, only a drain and fill, no 2x or 3x. (Takes 2 qts, 10oz)...
