50-55mph Vibration - Any Answers?

I have a new TL 5AT and I think I am experiencing the same vibration issue that has been talked about before. I don't think it is a tire issue b/c it seems to occur when I am cruising in traffic (not accelerating) around 50-55mph. If I take my foot off the gas or even put it in neutral at that speed, it disappears.

It is a very minimal problem but has anyone heard of any legimate solutions that have worked. I like the thought that it is a chip problem shifting the tranny into 5th too soon. If there a re no legit solutions, then I would rather put up with it for the 36 months of my lease than have the dealer screwing around with it for days at a time. It's too much fun to drive even with this minor nuisance.

Off topic, but it seems I constantly have losers in their BMW 3 series trying to challenge me. Even a 330 Ci with a manual couldn't hang with the 5AT

Thanks for any info.

I have the same very minor vibration in 5th at 55-60 mph in my 5AT. It's not something I plan on getting looked at unless it gets much more noticable.

I'm glad you're mopping up the 3-series cars. I've had my TL for 2 weeks, and I now have enough mileage to have a go, but so far, no takers. I'm ready and waiting...

From what I understand it is exhaust resonsance. It should occur btwn 1500 and 1900 rpms. Even with the car in neutral. I dont even notice it really.

I think its just flat spotting from the tires. I work at an Acura dealership in NY and one of the head National Product development reps from Acura came down last week. He wanted our feedback on the TL(Pros/cons and what complaints customers had). When the vibration issue came up...he said tha that Acura's engineers were aware of it and that they have come to the conclusion that it actually flat spotting problems with tires... he wouldn't say what their solution was, but I'm assuming its simply switching to Michelin tires.

Personally my car(an automatic '05 TL) vibrates on cold days within the first mile of driving then it subtly goes away. I think the tires just need to warm up to even out the tire. -Chris

Thanks for your post. I have the same exact flaspotting problem. However, this 55-60 mph vibration does not go away after driving 20+ miles.
Just wanted to let you know.

Flatspotting causes a vibration you can feel at LOW speed, not just some small range of higher speeds. Plus, the flatspotting problem would only be apparent after the car sat for overnight or so, in pretty cold weather. It might be there, but less noticeable, at higher temperatures. Typically, after driving for several miles, the flatspotting vibration disappears - until the next day. A 50-55 mph vibration could be caused by drivetrain vibration (engine turing slow enough that it vibrates a little), unbalanced tires and wheels, or other problems. A lot of people seem to say that their 50-55 mph vibration goes away when the car is in neutral, when they coast, or shift down to 4th gear. That is an indication of drivetrain vibration, and means it's NOT the tires causing the problem.

I agree with Hybrid. My A5 TL vibrates some between 50-60 mph (actually enough so I feel it in my body), but in manual mode in 4th gear I don't feel it. Thus I am not sure it is the tires, but rather the tranny lugging at 1500 RPM.

I agree with SWO although the vib. doesn't completely go away with the downshift. I wonder Acura will address this problem if it is indeed non-tire related issues.

I intentionally went to 50mph and 1500 rpm and got the vibration if you want to call it that. it is very minor and leaves once you accelerate. it is NOT the tires. I dont have the lame-o bridgestones I have michelin pilot sports. I dont think this is a serious issue or even any issue. some cars just do this at certain rpm/speed points. by the way mine is a 5sp auto.

fanurios, while you are correct about the tires being the cause of SOME vibrations (1 or 2 different ones for some people) this one (a third one) is from exhaust resonance, Acura has told me this, and many others such as fsconsult and scelipt.

They have also said that this is "NORMAL" and are not working on a fix.

Thanks for your comment though.

Hybrid, I have seen you post about the flat spotting, and not considering it important, but I did want to say the BS tires flat spot in as little as 4 hours.

If it were 3 days or more, I would be more accepting of the issue, but 4-8 hours and flat spots is not accpetable.

After the tire vibration goes away, then I get the 50-60mph/1500rpm vibration. It seems as if the computer keeps the engine at 1500 because I can go between 55-60 and the tach seems to stay at 1500. 50mph/1500rpm is usually before the lockup torque converter (I assume it has one because that is what it feels like when the rpm goes down) kicks in. After I leave the house I have about 8 miles where I can usually stay at 60mph, so if the vibration bothers me I put it in SS and go down to 4th gear.

I have for sure never said the flat spotting wasn't important. In fact, I replaced my tires at my own expense just due to flat spotting! What I have said is that it isn't a SAFETY issue, meaning it's not going to cause accidents or deaths. It's a big irritation that I woundn't accept in ANY car at any price.

As far as flat-spotting in as little as 4 hours, that's probably correct. It seems to be temperature dependent, and happens faster in colder weather, which makes sense.

The softer the tire (i.e. the higher performance it is) the more likely it'll flat spot when sitting in one place, I agree.

My A-spec rims w/ the Kumho tires flat spot after about a day of sitting in cold to very cold temps. The vibration smooths out after two miles. I can live with that for the added performance gained by the 18" rims and UHP tires
