3G TL HID Xenon Fog Lights

I've done my searching..... and I'm finding seriously conflicting stories on this mod. I've seen posts saying the dash needs pulled off and wires need spliced - and I've seen posts saying this is an easy Plug 'n Play install.

I need the truth AZiners!! Lol......

Thanks to all!

I love the look of bright white HID fog lights - I want 'em, but not if I have to rip the dashboard off and splice into wires.

I've moved your thread to the main section per the sticky in the Performance Parts and Modifications section.

You don't need to remove the dash or any of that at all! If you want to put some HID's in your fog lights it's fairly straight forward.

First you will need an HID kit for your car. You can buy one from various sources such as one of the vendors on acurazine, ebay, ddmtuning, etc.

Then you will need a HID relay kit to hook up your HID's to. This is a precaution and I think its necessary but others don't. What this does is use the factory wiring has a "trigger" and draws the power for the HID's directly from the battery. This way you don't run the risk of melting any of the factory wiring or starting a fire or something. One end of the kit plugs into the factory fog light connector, another end into the HID kit and then then there are 2 other wires that come out. The Red (power wire) is going to be attached to the battery and the black one is going to be grounded.

If you have a 2007/2008 TL the HID fog install is easy. I at first thought it would be a daunting task but it honestly took me 30 min. Do it through the fender lining. All you need to do is turn your wheel (left/right depending on which side you are installing the HID on) and just take off 3 clips. Pull the fender lining remove the old bulb and install the HID bulb.

I mounted the ballast using 3M tape. I suggest it and the ballast holds fine. I did have to replace the fuse for the fog lights from 10A to 15A.

For 3k get yellow film to make it a true yellow color. Otherwise they will look white.

Do keep in mind that every time you engage your bright* headlamp level, you will disengage your fog lamps... if they are correctly installed. If you go from bright to non-bright frequently in your area, this constant engaging and disengaging of HID fogs will shorten the life of your ballasts.

Just a thought.

* The 3G TL does not have bright headlamps but I didn't know what else to call them and still convey my thoughts.

The Bi-Xenon high beams! What Southernboy has sad is true! Rapidly turning on or off any sort of HID's or mercury/xenon based bulbs shortens their lifespan!

This is also true with incandescent lamps. It causes tungsten boil off which will result in premature filament failure. However, incandescent lamps are far less expensive than HID's so one can more easily afford their replacement.

A surprising number of 3G TL owners think that they have low and high beam headlamps when in fact they have nothing of the sort. It is good we try to point this out when possible in order that they become more familiar with their cars.

I have a 2004 TL that has a 2007 front bumper including the fog lights. I to would like the fog lights to be used as daytime driving lights. Is this possible and is there any reason why I shouldn't go this route?

Don't mind hijack bro! It's relevant to this discussion. I was wondering the same thing - did you get an answer?

I can't find pics of 3G TL with yellow fogs - does this look sweet? Or do xenon white fogs look better?

I know it's subjective and everyone's taste is different..... but just looking for your opinions. Weigh in as you wish - thanks!

Also - what's the best way to accomplish this? Buy yellow bulbs? I don't know what the "yellow film" is......

I have yellow fogs and I dig em. I dont have HID fogs tho, just nokya 2500 bulbs and yellow lamin-x film. The film adds a layer of protection from rocks and adds color. The film is so easy to put on, if you can put a sticker on a trapper keeper, you can install lamin-x.

Here are My Fogs with the Independent Fog Light Switch Mod. They are 3000K HIDs which should look yellow but dont. I mean if u look on the floor in front of the car you can see the Fog light glare very yellow but they dont seem to put out a deep yellow color head on. I had my Fogs HIDs without the relay and one of my ballast use to take longer to turn on. I had to flicker my switch to have them turn on. With the Relay they turn on Fine. The Normal Output without the relay for the Fogs doesn't seem to be enough for the HIDs so i strongly recommend the relay. Plus for the Fog Light Independent switch Mod u will need it anyways

BTW This DIY seemed a lot easier to me https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/g-029-diy-07-08-3g-tl-independent-hid-fog-lights-stock-switch-798978/ for the Independant FOG Light Switch with the OEM switch. Its for 07-08 Fogs

Lamin-x.com, they have all kinds of different film. No problems with mine at all. I ran into the same prob you did, werent yellow enough, then I did the film and it was perfect.
