I went to school with one of these fuckers, and the other is the father of my brosef (who is also in med school). The guy I went to school with, did premed req after graduating, but I assure he was a C student, as well as brosef's father. Even my brosef (MSEE) who is doing clinicals now, aced his premed reqs and scored very high on MCAT, but his undergrad GPA wasn't stellar (first year was a wash).
He's not going to John Hopkins, Harvard or Stanford Med, but he got in a very good state funded school on the first try (only 5 applications sent out). His counterparts he studied premed with took 2-3 rounds to get in, and they had higher overall GPAs, but lower MCATs (one of whom was a little too selective, but had his degree in civil).
That same brosef's real bro, also got into med school and is in his 2nd year. Also not a super stellar GPA. But he focused on pre reqs and MCAT. He actually sat on MCAT until last year it was valid before applying. Applied to one school and got in. There are many things to consider and I'm sure all the top schools have a filter because of how competitive it is to get in, but I assure you, a low GPA doesn't exclusively keep you out of the running.

U Missouri Kansas City, Average MCAT score: 3
...ummm... What I have no idea about the MCAT, but couldn't one, say, guess their way to a 3? That's gotta be a typo, right?
EDIT: Average is 3. Which means... did someone get in with a zero?

Didn't open links, but I'm assuming you're talking about the US. I've known enough people who had to bust their balls to get into med school, some of which were flat out denied due to grades. Wifey is also going through it now, as she's considering what she wants to do next. I can assure you, grades matter here.
She has the benefit of being considered a "mature" student, so they lower the entry grade requirements a bit. Either way, what you need is:
1. Need acceptable grades to get in. Most often, people with the minimum GPA requirement still don't make it in (at least here at the UofA)
2. Need to pass mcat
3. Need to pass interview. This is where many brainiacs don't make it because they lack people skills. Schools are starting to look for future doctors with people skills and compassion, as opposed to straight book smarts.

Thank you everyone for the birthday well-wishes and advice on being old AF. I really appreciate it!
All of that sounds good and fine, but what if I can't get myself in/out of the tub on my own?
Geezer.
You should take a nap and go to Denny's at 5:30 for dinner. Get a free scoop of vanilla ice cream for your birthday.
Then shit yourself in the booth, go home, take a bath (not a shower) and get in bed by 7:45. Turn on the TV and start watching some shows but fall asleep in the first 10 minutes of the show.
Wake up tomorrow and remark that you're not dead yet.

Frantz!
Happy Birthday!!!
What to expect:
Getting up more to piss at night.
Hair out of your ears, nose and eyebrows long enough to braid, I know you Islanders (although that might be a white boy affliction)
Less sex (with women)
Having to floss and brush more often to avoid dental work
Giving less of a fuck about your Kross Kolours being perfectly pressed and a perfect tape/fade
Yolo in moderation
Drinking (4 beers) until you pass out (at 9PM)
Loving family time more
Being more of a home(boy)body.
Being even MORE reasonable with money (you might have hit this milestone early)
Your parents becoming even more annoying with their life advice and what you should be doing.
Whalecum, MAN! A barrel full!
Need a towel? Pre-stiff ones!

Hey, our business people might be dull, but at least our doctors aren't civil engineering dropouts who ended up wearing a white coat, charging yo ass like crazy while "saving" lives.
Wifey has to write the mcat and is freaking out about it. No issues with bio or chemistry. It's the physics that scares her. I'm like "pffff... Physics?! That shit is fun!!"
Sure, just PM me your address and I'll pass it on.

You turned old and didn't plan properly ahead of time? Pre-AARP didn't send you the mailer to get the tub installed
Well, I'm sure there are some strapping young Latino boys you can hire to get it retrofitted:
Or, you may decide just to hire one of those steaming hot pieces of man meat just to live with you and help you in and out. In and out. In and out.
A sort of, handy-man, if you will.

But unfortunately we're stuck dealing with mostly fuckderps who mostly care about skrilla. I'm not saying they don't do a decent job, but filing in patients in 15 minute slots is not medicine. It's consultation at best, might as well be a lawyer.
For the most part, nurses take up the slack (lots of slack), and not all of them should be in medicine either. Doctors read a chart, how are you feeling, you'll see my outrageous bill later so you don't cuss me out now. Nurses are the ones who often do patient care management, question the drug cocktail, make sure the doctor doesn't unknowingly kill patient.
I'm around more doctors than I care to be. I can say that some 21 year old med student knows almost nil about the world or the patients he/she is going to be taking care of. Clinicals and residencies prepare them, but it really takes time to develop experience and fine skills to be good at medicine.
I think in general, with a lot of prep, MCAT is cake for engineers.
I hope she likes being on her hands and knees..
... because these floors aren't going to clean themselves.

Noooooo!!!! Be reckless and irrational... Come to work high on mescaline, pour laundry soap in the fountain, send out a company wide email announcing everyone can go eat a dick sandwich. Then pack up a company laptop, grab a handcart and take the 55" TV from the conference room out to your car.
Do some FWD donuts on the lawn before you leave and crash into the CEO's Porsche on the way out.

Per Maj's comment about the medical system...100% agree. Watching my sister go through it, she's also part of a system that not 1) works the new ones to the bone but 2) willfully nurtures the vicious cycle that in MOST cases generates apathy and in some cases, entitlement.
I work in IT...and in some cases, while I may get crucified for saying it, figuring out a system issue is no different than figuring out a health issue. What is the root cause? Are we bandaiding it with some drug? Or should we go deeper into the problem instead of NOT listening to the patient and really helping them identify what the issue is...?
Doctors more often than not are paid by the patient they see and so, guess what? It's an express lane in and out of the room and in most cases 5 seconds...tops. Surgery! Chemo! Drugs! Drugs! More drugs!
Still...end of the day, I will say this: I'm freaking shallow and love the $$$$...to me, that's what it's at...and yeah, I'd be one of THOSE. And likely in gen. surgery or anesthesiology...
Or...an oral surgeon cuz why? Crowns FTW, baby.

i texted majofo, but I really enjoyed his suggestion of being an ultrasound tech.
I would get to talk and learn cool shit, with no chance of breaking anything because I'm not the one repairing the machines....
the patients on the other hand

Most ladies prefer ladies to do prenatal ultrasound, but there's way more work out there outside of pregnant women. Tons of urgent care work.

Seriously, work would not be called "work" if it was well, not work.
That BS that some people find utter joygasm coming (see what I did there?) about work? To me: Myth. Eventually, at some point, you'll get bored and there are days you want to stick your head in a microwave...Why? Because: People.
Look at all the stupid on the planet...People. So, of course, work is going to blow at times. But, you get paid...a means to an end.

I also wanna punch anyone in the face that says I'm "lucky" to be where I'm at...namely, with a pension, 401K, great benefits, and a steady paycheck that'll ensure my family always has food and my daughter will only have to strip part time to go to community college.
Know what I did for the first 7 years with the company? Answer the fucking phones...know how fulfilling it was to do that, drive 2.5 hours in traffic to do it (my doing, moved to be with my ex and her 2 kids)...have literally 20 minutes of personal time to watch TV before the grind the next day.
And now...I go to work, ensure AZ is running smoothly for an hour...get paid to poop...have breakfast, make a sandwich, then get in a company truck to go explore South Florida and troubleshoot smart grid network equipment...I'm one of 6 in the State. Even then, I don't feel "fulfilled" every day...there are daily/weekly banalities of being micromanaged...not feeling productive every day, constantly changing and unclear directives that overlap and then are forgotten that management is the one that changed it when something isn't done...
SO yes, work is work...get that payper. THat's what we're here for...at 330pm, I get to go home and play with my car and my dick and be Jeremy and fulfilled.
Part of the reason why I like keeping the tinkering a hobby...if I HAD to do it, I'd eventually not love it anymore.
OH, pick a career that you love and you'll never work a day in your life...and you'll collect unemployment and wonder why the rich have a problem chipping in ONLY A LITTLE so you can have healthcare and everything else that hard working people have in life. Where is your compassion.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game. Honestly, medicine is best suited for those who have common sense, some smarts, and who generally love taking care of people (GPA only tells you they like to achieve, possibly smart). Med school is a time drain, definitely not easy, so it's a good marker to use.

And yes, fuck those 15min doctors. My previous GP was like that. More like an 8 min doctor and I could only bring up one issue per appointment. The new doc I've been seeing for the last couple years comes into the room, shakes my hand, asks about MY life, washes his hands after the handshake and then takes the time to go over the reason I'm there. I've sat with him for up to 35 minutes. I've never had a GP like that. And he's a bit older too... Just before 50, id guess. Around here, it's in, out, in, out (giggity).
Nurses are the front line soldiers. They do a lot of shit. Much respect for them, especially if they love what they do.

Anesthesiology is the biggest career joke of life. Super super important, but a fucking gravy job. Old friend of mine is an anesthesiologist. I didn't see him for a few years after he finished school. I asked him how he likes being an anesthesiologist. His answer (and I quote):
"I like making lots of money and I like reading magazines. Work is good!"

I totally agree. That's why it's nice that these schools are starting to look at people who actually give a shit about saving lives and have compassion, as opposed to money grabbing, textbook geniuses. As always, nothing is perfect, but it seems the medical association is starting to understand and see where they can make improvements.

It shows that you have a responsible individual who can be counted on to be knowledgeable because well, grades are a measurable way to gauge knowledge.
STILL...it should not be the one-stop measurement but part of the overall. The interview is important as are what the individual does outside of schoolwork/study and per my sister, there is now more emphasis put on that BUT, grades still matter.
