The 3G Ramblings & General Discussion Thread (Part 2)
Drifting
Been chattin with a member (Skier4lyfe303) on here about hydro dipping. I did google it and I found a thread about it from a couple years ago. Any of you guys ever had any of your car parts done? How durable is it?

For a guy nearly my Father's age...you sure are down with the young lingo. Young at heart, I dig and aspire to that too.

In my head, I'm still 25. The rest of me is FUBAR.
I hang out with my 2 sons quite a bit, play golf with a lot of younger 20 and 30 something guys so I think I just pick it up by osmosis. Both are car guys too...oldest has a 78 280Z, which used to be mine and an 06 M5, youngest an 04 TL which used to be his older brother's.

I have read the threads on the BMW forums about the Vanos pump but I'm not clear, the all seem to be older threads. Is that pump not available anymore? If it goes is he screwed?

It is, the original color was black. The second owner in AZ painted it read, I took it back to black when I bought it. I sold it to my son when I bought a 350Z, which I sold when I got my TL. It was a rewarding progression to the best car I've ever owned.

Really only one thing wrong with the Z, it is a 4 speed. My son is looking for a 5 speed to swap into it.

He was aware of the Vanos issue when he bought it a couple months ago. It was one owner, babied with only 29K on it and he had it checked out by the local Beemer dealer. He did have to have to differential seals replaced for $300. He was told that was due to a lack of driving and the seals just dried out. That makes sense to me.

The pump can be replaced.. but the design is flawed and can't be fixed apparently. It's a damn shame because I think the e60 M5 is one of the best M5s they've produced. I was seriously in the market for one as well but a fellow member who got rid of his, bestowed the knowledge above. It's so bad, aftermarket warranty companies won't cover the e60 M5 anymore.
I still find it hard to believe that it's as inconvenient to rebuild as they say, but I'm no expert in the bimmer arena and the v10 is a rare engine built only for that gen.

Also.. if he bought the 7sp SMG.. it has a history of going out, at the cost of $7k to replace.

The V10 is special to say the least. In many cases, when the Vanos pump fails, it's catastrophic requiring a rebuild. The shit thing is, the engine requires special tools to rebuild. The honing machine itself costs $15k. Add in new parts and you're in the $30k range. Might as well buy a crate engine.. $25k.

Thanks Maj...I'll pass on this info to my son.

E63 M6/ E60 M5 are pretty much the same.. check out these dolts destroy their E63 M6 in protest because of mechanical issues that BMW refused to fix under warranty. The owner also didn't like the way the car jolted between gears.. dumbass shouldn't have bought an SMG then.

Just texted with my son about the Vanos. He said he was aware and that the BMW dealer here said there was a recall for it. When they checked his VIN it didn't come up so they told him it had been done. Based on these guys totally the M6 that's probably BS. I will say that the dealer here has a very good rep, used to be my dealer when I bought a VW Vanagon back in 85. They went to bat for me with VW corporate a couple times about issues I had...brakes were the major one. Front pads would wear out in 10K-12K miles...they were under designed, too small. They got VW to replace them every time they wore out in the 3 years I owned it. Anyway, still the same service manager.

You guys watch fooosssballll this weekend.
The Lions Eagles game was a riot. It was completely whited out the first quarter (no wasis). Eagles only had 12 yards the first half.
OU and OSU game was good as well.
Dumbass McCoy couldn't fill the shadow of his big brother though. Even with a slow start to the season, the win would have clinched them the division. Kudos to Baylor.
Now, as a parting gift we will receive the biggest ass whooping from Oregon in our bowl game.
What sucks is I really thought we had a chance with the score that low before halftime. Well at least our bowl game is close to home so it will feel like playing at home.

I hope he has many years of problem-free ownership. I'm too chicken shit to risk it.
Tell him to consider straight piping it.

Yeah, don't think he'll do that, less attention from 5-0 the better.
