At my old job they required us to have taken or at least booked in their system half our vacation time by July. This came about one year when corporate got bent over dry by an audit that revealed that if everyone cashed out their unused vacay time the 4th quarter profits (and associated bonuses for upper mgmt) would evaporate. That was a hilarious event because they tried to force sudden vacations by shutting down certain offices and royally pissed off some big customers.

Pro Tip: never take a non-sales position with a company where President and all VPs came directly from Sales. It was surreal to watch them make big decisions 100% based on public perception/image and 0% based on facts.

We've got something funny going on that no one is explicitly owning up to. But we're allowed to accrue Comp Time for over 80 hours per pay period; typically not a problem and I'll carry a few dozen hours throughout the year taking it here and there. But with Covid home work, and a shit tonne of stuff to do all of a sudden to hit some milestones, I was banking some serious time. Coupled with a mountain of use-or-lose annual leave, and suddenly they started moving my bi-weekly accrued comp time into paid OT.

Which is nice in a sense, I guess. I don't need the money per se, and at this point it just fuxxors my taxes for next year, but I suspect there's some ulterior motive along the lines of what you mentioned. But no one will actually admit it. Some day I'm going to corner someone and make them uncomfortable. Probably ask about this pay thing too.
