33mpg

ok guys, i dont know why i waited till today to post this but, on saturday i came from sacramento from a meet with other TLers, CLers, and other members with different cars.

well on my way home i filled up the tank from stockton, ca and reset the trip computer.

When I got to fresno ca, and exit off the highway, i checked the trip computer, it said:

33MPG
76MPH
miles: 111

I have around 12800 miles on my TL, and its auto. When i told the guy who went with me in his '03 type-s that that my 04 TL gave 33 mpg, he was surprised by that.

Has anybody gotten this kind of mpg?

If driving steadily, it's not the surpris to see 04TLs (Auto) reach that mark in the highway, where this machine has the tremendous EPA stuff inside.

On Saturday I took a 195 mile trip, some mountains (Berkshires) and some highway (MassPike) and when I got back I filled the tank with 6.01 gallons. I've got 2200 miles on the car so 32 mpg isn't too bad and hopefully the mileage will improve.

Problem?

I drive mostly city (NYC) and average 15 mpg - should I be getting more? My average speed has been between 18 - 23 mph - don't know if I should bring it in & have it checked - any thoughts?

nope its normal to get 15mpg driving in the city. that's what i get when i drive around nyc. when i take in on the highway to LI i get much better mileage. if your average speed is 70mph you should easily break 30mpg. but your average speed is 18-23 which means alot of stop and go or crawling traffic.

Urrr, I think this MPG is kind of OK. My 5AT is averaging 15-19 MPG while driving between those traffic areas (Nassau, Queens, Manhattan, and Hoboken). As I mentioned above, IMO, this 04TL is so good in highspeed cruising, but bad in traffic jam.

I think the TL 04 is doing great. My wife is the primary driver of it, she drives 20 miles each way to work M-F, like 90% highway + 10% local. She got 29mpg with 40mph on the trip computer. Think that makes sense and is reasonable when you guys get 33mpg for smooth highway milages.

Here's a picture of my trip computer taken on a recent 500 mile highway trip. Geocities doesn't allow linking, so to see the pic you'll need to copy and paste the link into your browser's address window.

http://www.geocities.com/slothkills/greatmpg.jpg

Apologies for the blur; it says 48 MPG at 72 MPH.

I picked up a 5AT loaner at the dealer, set the cruise at 75, reset the trip computer, and drove the 30 hwy miles to work. Before turning off in the parking lot, the display said 33 mpg. The car had less than 800 miles on it.

if you reset the counter when you are on the highway and average 70mph in 6th gear you will get 30+ mpg. its the real world everyday driving that is gonna give you a guage of what you will normally get. i can get 40+mpg if i drive downhill with a tail wind. i doubt most people in larger metro areas will get 30+ because you encounter some traffic during the day.

Our MID seems to disply 50+ in those situations you've mentioned above... ??

I have 650 miles on my TL and since I brought it home, most city suburb driving with very little highway...I'm getting 22 mpg.

Best so far is 27 MPG. That is commuting - some stop and go and some mashing, I bet I could pull 30-33 in a long uniterrupted ride. (3500 miles on it.)

15mpg in nyc is probably about right. Driving habits have a lot to do with mpg too. I average about 18 mpg in dc. IF I drive agressively from stoplight to stoplight the mpg fall even lower. On the highway the mpg is over 30. btw I drive an AT.

I average 22mpg each tank. I've gotten lower in all city, but generally I get some cruising each day on I75 connector north bound. On my last trip to Orlando I got 32mpg going down. But now that my car is BACK IN THE F'ING SHOP with the MIL again, I think the mileage was compromised.

The longest road trips I've made so far have been about 55 miles to my ex's. Gas mileage has been 34 mpg, and if not for slowdowns probably could've gotten another mpg out of it...

My 12-13 mile commute average 22 mpg at about 21 avg mph.

I got " >50 " but I was going down a hill. I got mine on Tuesday, and on a stretch of "average" speed 39mpg i got 33mpg in 5th gear (nice flat road) That dropped to 24 after I dropped to 4th for a hill. Still, not bad at all, I'm perfectly happy.

34MPG avg
72MPH
miles: 1265

Houston TX - Miami FL.

great car, you can race if you want,
but you can also save on gas if you want too...

MID shows >50 at 125 MPH
when I set my speed to Neutral and reset the trip computer!

Just finished a long vacation trip. Albuquerque north to Glacier NP and Banff - to Vancouver/Victoria - to Mt St Helens and Grand Coulee Dam, Coer d'alene, ID to Missoula MT, to Yellowstone and then home. For 5608 miles (Highway/National Parks/Mountains and some city running around) my TL automatic used 189.48 gallons of gas -- 29.46 mpg. Best tank got 34.26 mpg. YMMV.
