2006 TL - Car moves with no gas

Hello,

When I bought my car about 10 days ago, if I shift from Park to Drive and let off the brake but do not press the accelerator, the car would just stay still. It would not move. But now, it has started moving..... not too fast but still moves. I believe it is normal that the car should move when shifted to Drive even without accelerator, right?

I want to check with you guys to see if this phenomenon of the car moving in Drive with no accelerator input is normal.

Also, now that my car has started doing this, which it was not doing before, what does it mean? Does it mean that it is freeing up more? Is this change in behavior a concern or relief?

Does the car have some kind of learning feature where the car computer learns the driving behavior and adapts itself?

Thanks

Most auto trans cars will start to creep forward in "Drive" without any throttle.
The TL (certainly mine, anyway) is unusual in that it creeps forward less than most vehicles, and sometimes not at all depending on road conditions.

And yes, the TL does have an adaptive ECU which adapts to your driving style after a few days of driving.

Welcome to AZ.

When you put the car in drive you engage the transmission i.e. the engine and transmissio get linked so it's normal for thr car to move forward. Not only autos but even manual trans cars do it. Perfectly normal.

Yes, this is normal for a stock car. A tight torque converter, such as one in a performance sedan, will engage at a lower rpm, whereas a loose converter, such as a chevy corsica, will do nothing without throtle input.

New driver? but yeah it's perfectly normal for it to move depending on road conditions. Just use the brakes if you don't want it to move

I thought it was a joke at first. It's normal. If it moves sometimes and sometimes not, it is directly attributable to the surface the car is sitting on. The torque convertor is a hydraulic coupling, serves the same purpose as the clutch on a manual. If the engine is idling, it's exerting some force on the wheels. The more rpm and throttle, the more it engages but it never fully disengages when the engine is running or the idle is way too low.

Even a car with a high stall convertor will want to roll in drive. I've run a 4,000 stall before and if you take your foot off the brake on level ground the car will move.

It looks like it's unanimous-it's normal.
