2005TL vs. 1970 396 Stock Chevelle
Haha - well almost a year of listening to my old man bitch about my "honda" we are finally going to have it out in the 1/8mile, 1/4mile.
My 2005 5 speed auto vs his STOCK 70thousand mile 1970 SS Chevelle...I think I have a chance.
I am putting on Kumho Ecsta SPT rubber with my new Axis Matric 18" rims on tuesday...dont quite have the cash for a SC this year, but I am wondering if there are any other "quick" power/handling addons I should be looking into before the SC?
thanks!
Rob

Good luck. You're going to need it.

Lose the 18s and go with smaller, lighter wheels. I don't know much about drag racing, but in all racing you want low inertia wheels and grippy tires. The best mod you could make would be really sticky front tires.
Also, prepare to lose, but then challenge him to a course with turns

Those cars have to be walked off the line or they have traction issues. Without the right launch your TL could embarass..
I believe the road tests from that era are 14.5 and higher for that car without the L78.

if its got the original motor with no aftermarket stuff, he's done for. Hit and miss with old cars cuz' you never know who's done theirs up right. 50/50 chance of beating any old car. My good friend has a 1969 chevelle with the 350 and grips of work, 4 barrel edelbrock, dougs headers, roller cams, just about all the 8-cylinder goodies you can get, and he guestimates 350-400 hp. His car sounds f^cking crazy, like thunder, but my car just smokes it over and over. 0-60 is almost all first gear for him, so I dont leave too bad at that point, but after that, i really gain distance. Depends on how its set up. I frequently encounter old cars that think they can haul ass, and sound like they should hand my ass to me when I catch up, but they sound awesome while Im flying by. good luck

if your dad took good care of that car it will destroy you. You don't have to walk those cars off the line either. I wouldn't slam it from the start or he'd cook those rear tires for a few seconds. Once he gains solid traction he will push past you pretty easily and just keep going. the 396 is far and away a superior engine to the 350 and much much faster. also you can get huge power increases from bolt-on's. I want your dad's car someday!

Hes likely to eat you for lunch man....had 1967 Chevelle SS 396 Automatic......as soon as he hooks that bad boy he is gone! Trust me.....real seat pinner! When we put 5:13 gears in it it would pull the wheels off the ground with ease.....would really trip you out....of course had no top end then.....way better with 4:11 ratio....more streetable.

His is the 396 - All orginal and kept in such good shape you can eat breakfast off exhaust.
I am going to be able to put in the AEM CAI in 10days, Comptec CB in about 30days.
Either way the race goes it should be fun, old school vs. new.
I will try and get some pics...

Well it finally happened tonight...
1sr run - TL by a lot as he wentsideways off the line
2nd run - Chevelle by a nose as we were rolling and I started in 2nd
3rd run - Dead even, he had me by a nose hair up to 100mph then I took him...my Dad go the beter jump off the line (I must have been sleeping haha)
over all...damm good performance for the TL...in the end he had to admit that the Acura was a hell of a lot faster then he thought!
good times good times...now this weekend the summer tires come off...
