2005 TL Torque Steer

I'm about to purchase 2005 TL and noticed the tremendous amount of torque steer (compared to a 2006 that I test drove). My research indicates Acura made an adjustment to the 2006 to reduce the amount of torque steer - they did a very good job. Can I do something myself or take it to a dealership and have them do something for this 2005?

I have an 05 Tl with navi and i dont notice any torque steering. Was both the cars you test have the same tires, since navi and non-navi ave differnt tires.

Hey duck, welcome to AZ

If you are looking at 5AT, then there's no difference between the 05 and 06. The change applied to the 6MT models only. This thread has more info: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...t=torque+steer

I'm not certain the tires were the same but both cars had less than 30k miles and the rims were stock therefore I assume the tires were the same unless Acura changed them from 2005 to 2006. It was raining when I test drove the 2005 and the tires would barely grab hold of the pavement..that may have played a part. Neither car had Navi.

This thread pretty much answers my questions - the solution (i.e. power reduction) by Acura is not desirable. I will check this off as an issue I'll just live with...the car is so awesome, it shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the immediate responses - I'll post some photos after I purchase the car (next week).

I couldn't believe how my 07 TL-S has ZERO torque steer... none of my friends believe me, until they drive it.

EL-42s???...

Welcome to the forum.
FYI, the stock Bridgestone Turanza EL-42's were 1) standard on non-Navis in '04 and '05, and 2) are infamous for their [pick any bad trait here: lack of dry grip, absence of wet grip, excessive wear, inability to keep round shape, etc.]. Acura even had a replacement program for the EL-42s. See the myriad complaints in the Tires, Wheels section here.
That might explain your issue with excessive torque steer in wet weather, assuming that the tires were EL-42s.
The Michelins, standard with the Navis, are much better tires. Maybe you can drive one of those for comparison, or have the dealer do a switch.

the seller offered (I didn't even ask) 4 new tires. He said they're Bridgestones and he paid around $400. The current tires have 27k miles and are in decent shape so I will probably drive on them for another 20k miles or so. $400 Bridgestones are probably a step in the wrong direction relative to a performance upgrade.....Maybe I can trade them towards purchase of better, higher performing tires. Now I just need to figure out which ones to get....and maybe new rims too....I'll check around to see what the other members say.

Thanks.

This i can't believe. I was going to test drive one, but decided not to upon discovering the interior illumination is red. Blue is much better, IMO. I'm very picky about my cars and a simple change like this can ruin the whole car for me. I'm taking my car in tomorrow so I just may take a test drive of the TL-S while I wait. If there is indeed no torque steer (which I doubt I will experience when flooring from a standstill) I may be able to overlook the sea of red. I'll tell you one thing, the TL-S exhaust pipes are the shit!

duck - I have an '06. Torque steer all depends on how you drive the car. If you drive conservatively, you wont experience any. If you drive sporty, as do I (and 95% of TL owners on AZ), you WILL notice. Sometimes I dont even mean to do a fast start and the tires screech. It's quite embarrasing, especially when driving next to cheaper, uglier cars that dont do that - i.e. the Buick LeSabre that passed me as my tires were busy trying to grip asphalt. Pretty much the only thing that comes close to a solution, and I use that term loosely, would be sport tires. You are right though, the car is so awesome that SOMETIMES I overlook the t/s.

Can't remeber the details but I thought www.hondanews.com technical description said the 2006 TL ECU had the engine torque reduction to minimize torque steer in low speed/gears regardless of the transmission type.

Luv the TL-S but physics disagrees with this statement.

Try punching the accelerator with your hands off the steering wheel and then say it has no torque steer.....

Test the torque steer without the VSA

If you turn off the VSA and test it, you'll get an idea of how mush of this maguc is due to the transmission and mechanical bits, versus software/ABS/drive by wire.

Well, I tried the "hands off the wheel" test, and it moved about <5 degrees...

Maybe my power steering is out, because the wheel does NOT get yanked from my hands.

This was after coming from an STI with absolutely ZERO torque steer. I'm not imagining things.

Have any of you drove one? The steering is VERY tight, and that may make up for it.

Tires and road surface can also make worse or not as bad when it comes to torque steer
