2004 TL 6-Speed manual

I recently acquired a manual TL with approximately 68K miles on it. It seems to me that there is a faint, high-pitched winding noise that accompanies the gear box activity during acceleration in gears 1, 2 and 3 and disappears for gears 4, 5 and 6. A fellow auto Acura owner told me that this is normal, but I'm not so sure. Otherwise, shifts and drives smoothly. Has anyone had any issues with their manual TL or are there any particular maintenance items I need to know going forward?

The only issue that I had with my 6mt was that it would sometimes resist going into 3rd gear, or would pop out. People told me to change the fluid to GM SyncroMesh. I said yeah yeah, ordered some, and put it off for over a year. I finally changed the fluid, and holy shit... it made a night and day difference. It never gives me any issue going into gear whatsoever.

I haven't heard (or heard of) a winding noise. Have you checked the fluid and fluid level?

This sounds like the problem I have. I also have an 04 m/t TL, and I have a high pitched squeal that sounds like metal scraping together for about 1-1.5 seconds; under light accelerations and load (1-3 gears usually about 2500-3000 rpm). And in gears 4-6. It's louder and more prolonged when I'm driving uphill. If i get on the gas I will almost never hear the noise.
My TL is lowered with type s struts and Tien springs, and I noticed this noise started after I installed them. So far Ive replaced both front hub bearings, ball joints and bushings. They were all worn out (125,000 miles on oe suspension) and needed replacement.
I was going to wait for the noise to get worse so I could find the noise with more ease. It won't make the noise on a lift and it's hard to listen to a noise like that on the road...you can hear it just as loud on either side of the car. My only conclusion so far is that is something loose that is rattling at a certain resonance frequency and vibration, like dust shield or exhaust shield. Or maybe the pilot bearing is bad its' the only external rotating part I haven't changed. ..but I doubt it is that.
So my answer to your questions is just another question in the end, I have not gotten any closer to figuring this noise out but I also have a popping noise I think I'm gonna get xlr8 mounts. Also I did read somewhere on azine about the brake caliper pins vibrating. It sounds like the dumbest cause but hey usually the simplest answer is the best one. So keep looking it over and as always take it to a shop and have it looked over. good luck!

draining and refilling with GM Friction Modified fluid is cheap and might be worth a shot.

Have you heard of the noise i'm talking about? i have the "once in a while 3 gear grind" but im talking about a different noise. it's not during shifting but accelerating as chicagoland also stated.

I have had a couple manual TL Type S's and do not recall any winding noises that were speed/rpm related.
As mentioned they both required the GM fluid to work smoothly though going into 3rd gear. Ugh, those damn 6mt's lol

I have a 2004 6 speed TL and have this annoying noise too. Mine comes on at exactly 1900 RPM in EVERY gear. It only lasts like 0.5 second but is really loud. Sounds like some metal pads grinding. It's not the heat shield and should not come from my transmission neither. I'll go to a more experienced mechanic soon.

yeah i either dont have the noise or in my mind it's normal. The automatic in my mother's Odyssey makes a similar whirring noise when accelerating so that could be what you're describing?

I had a pinging type noise that was caused by the intermediate shaft heat shield which was easily fixed. That usually occurred at a certain low RPM.

Are you guys able to produce and upload a video of said noise?

I have an 04 MT and I have never heard any abnormal noises from the gearbox. Mine only has like 38K miles on it and I switched to GM synchromesh at about 34K.

Try the GM fluid first, since its cheaper than tearing apart your tranny, if still there, then u may have some costly repairs.

When I got my tl with 107k miles or so it made the same noise you are describing but after I replaced my serpentine belt it went away. check how worn your belt is.

pinging? did it sound like a loud metal on metal scraping? like nails on a charkboard time 100?

And yes I want to check the i-shaft shield. It's been off before when I replaced the clutch last summer.

I will work on making a video tomorrow or Thursday..

Thanks guys let's get this shit figured out!

Are you sure it's coming from the transmission. Wheel bearings usually cause a faint winding, roaring noise.

I guess I'm not sure if it's actually coming from the tranny, but the noise is associated to the winding of the gears. It does not sound like anything is grinding at all.

Is it definitely linked to RPM, and not speed?

What his noise is sounds like mine...the noise I hear is rpm, speed and engine load related. If I give it some juice (like 4 grand and vtec) there is no noise ever. 2000 rpm like it's job and it's noisy.

And no I just changed the bearings and the noise is identical...never changed but one of the bearings was loose so I replaced them both.

I don't think it can be linked to both speed and RPM. It should be one or the other, and which one it is should reveal some info about the problem.

No, that is not the friction modified fluid. The replacement part number for the GMSFM fluid is 10953509;

93k on mine and I have a noise like baseball cards in a bicycle wheel. It's noticeable until 3rd gear because the noise gets faster/softer as speed increase. It happens under power and engine braking while cruising around parking lots. I'm pretty sure it's a case bearing or input shaft bearing. I can also hear a whirring noise when the car is in neutral and I rev it up.
