Definitely a must if youve got an AT.

I did this a month ago as a precaution and ha a bit of trouble locating them, even with my iPad in front of Me, looking at the pics from the original DIY. It tool Me about an hour for both switches.... But I was neon exceedingly careful.

Great posts and pics above. Maybe a mod can add the pics to the first post.

Somebody who has done this with a Type-S, please confirm what part number's we will need as I do believe the Type-S is different. I want to do this, but want a confirmation before I go ahead and order all my parts.

I am in the same boat. Got the Redline ATF-F/Lightweight on the way.. I'm going to wait until I hit 60-65K to do this, so between now and summer, I'd like a confirmation of part numbers and procedure before I attempt this.

Thanks for the write-up, plenty of great pictures and it will help!

Plenty people have been doing this, the part numbers are either in this thread or one of the transmission threads with pictures and all just for the later TLs.

This thread is a huge help. I am very novice when it comes to automobile repair/maintenance and even I feel confident I can do this. I will order the parts and then do it in the parking lot at AutoZone considering I don't have any tools.

Has it been confirmed yet if there actually is two 3rd gear switches or one for the type s. The Helms service manual shows only one 3rd gear switch, one 4th gear switch and one 2nd gear switch to be changed. Could this be because of ss mode on the type s that it's like that.

My '04 TL (current @ 110K miles) is starting to get pretty harsh while changing gears and I'm hoping that this mod will help. It seems as if it stays in gear too long, then has a hard shift into the next gear. Happens in 1-4 basically 40-50% of the time. I've even had a few pretty hard downshifts every once in awhile (i'd say once every 400 miles). Will these switches fix this problem or is there something else I need to do?

I'm looking to do this and the ATF at the same time, hoping that it will make my TL like new again.

What's the best/cheapest place to order these 4 parts from?

This isn't something you should wait to do. Your clutches are wearing at a very fast rate especially if you're having the symptoms you describe. Every day you go without swapping the fluid puts it that much closer to a trans rebuild.

Since this is most likely an urgent thing that I need to take care of (Pressure switches and ATF), where do I find the switches and everything I need for cheap like everyone's getting them. I don't have too much time between school and work to look but I know I can install them myself if you just take the old one's off and put the new one's on and that's it! The ATF fluid I might not be able to do as I'm not quite sure how to go about that. I don't have the $$ for the 3x3 with the expensive fluid like Redline, but when you factor in the cost of a shop just replacing it once...it comes out about the same. Not sure if 1 time with a good fluid with suffice.

Anyways, I'd appreciate it if you all could help me locate those 4 parts and help me decide on which ATF to use. I'm sure it's not too hard to do the ATF change. Unplug, Drain, fill, plug hole? lol

$130 for a case of Redline is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new transmission.

You can locate the part numbers for the switches (and their washers) in this thread, and I suggest ordering them from oemacuraparts.com

Damn I just ordered the switches/gaskets (a good thing) from acuraoemparxs.com. They're in FL. Should have done oemacuraparxs.com instead. They would get here a lot faster from AZ.

Its easier to do than you think. When your doing the switches, you can drain the tranny at the same time well atleast a 1x3 lol. The whole 3x3 and switches would take about 30-45 mins.

^it was really easy!!!!
i dont have an automatic but followed DUHOCKEYS pictures and learned to do it on the spot!

THe only thing is, I couldnt remove the shroud. i unbolted the two bolts, but could not get the wire that is connected to it to come off. we just left the shroud hanging.
we could still reach in and change out the 3rd switch no problem.

See this is the confusing part just like if there is a 2nd gear pressure switch that needs to be changed on the type s. We need another seperate thread for 07-08 base/type s owners. My helms service manual shows only one 3rd gear switch and a 2nd gear switch.

To all who is interested in the complexity of the 07-08 models, I would say that this DIY does not apply. All sensors are in totally different locations

Ok here goes....

1 of the sensors is underneath the motor mount bracket as previously stated. You'll have to remove the stock intake airbox to access it.

Another sensor is underneath the throttle body. It sits on top of the tranny on the back side. The connector points towards the firewall. Access is very tight, at least for me. If you have child hands, this should be a walk in the park..lol I broke the sensor upon removal, so be careful!

Another angle of it

The last sensor is on the bottom of the tranny. If you can find the VIN# plate on the tranny, it is just above it. The connector to the sensor points to the driver's side wheel. Access to it is tricky, you have to enter from the side where the fender well splash guard. You have to use a long socket and 10" extension

It took me about 2.5 hrs to change all 3 sensors. I probably spent an hour of that, easy, just trying to locate the sensors because I do not have an FSM. I simply took my time to ensure I got good pictures and changed the correct sensors...

Now that I know what's involved, it should be an hour job.

Good Luck

^^I saw that and I think that does apply to us Shark but my other question of the 2nd gear pressure switch hasn't been confirmed. Unless that's the "other" 3rd gear switch. But I know for a fact in the Helms service manual it only speaks of one 3rd gear and the 4th one and a 2nd gear one.

This is what I am referring to as well, the part number for the 4th and 3rd was already divulged earlier in the thread, but I was waiting to see if we needed a 2nd gear one or not.

Thanks Shark for the part # again & JDM Rice for the pics.

I just wanted to make sure before I install. There seems to have been a little confusion on the first few pages about Part Numbers. I have an '04 TL and this is what I received today:

1- 28600-Ray-003
1- 28610-Ray-003
2- 90471-PW7-A00 (10mm Gaskets)

Is this correct? I'll be installing tonight or tomorrow, and doing the ATF change to Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle ATF (Full Synthetic). Wish me luck

I really wish you would have done a type-f. You're only getting half the benefit. There have only been a couple people with any sort of shift quality complaints and both are having fluid level issues. Incaccurate came from the Mobil One fluid to Redline Racing, his review was outstanding and outlined the qualities of the racing fluid over Mobil One. Even if you tried a cheap type F for $2/quart it would produce much lower wear than Mobil One synthetic multi vehicle.

Don't get me wrong though, what you're doing is 100x better than sticking with Z1 and old switches.

On a different note, I'm tracking the Tempest, it's been out for delivery all day so any minute now. I'll probably add on to the other Tempest thread I have going. Might take some pictures of it tonight but I won't be able to install it until next Friday. I'm seriously considering taking it to work (I have to work the weekend) and taking a long lunch to do the install.

Thanks for the help again! I haven't purchased the ATF yet...forgot my card when I went to the store . I came home to my parents (for a garage) to do the ATF and switches myself and forgot my jack. Murphy's law huh! I've never done an ATF change or switches so I'm a little unsure of doing it myself.

I've called about 10 shops around here, and no joke...8 of them have said they will flush my transmission and it will be fine. One guy even said he want's to drive it first...uh, hell no you can't drive my car. WTF is wrong with these shops. The other 2 were very knowledgeable and one guy even started laughing when I said that other shops said that, and when I told him it was an '04 Acura. He said "yeah...those aren't the best tranny's I've seen." Anyways, if I can find a jack from a neighbor then I'll try to tackle it, though I'd have to use Mobil1 b/c Redline and Amsoil aren't in stores. Maybe I'll just wait and order 2 quarts of D4 and 1 of Racing (thats the type-F right?).

I saw your post about the Tempest being a different version. That probably pissed you off, nice now though since it's acutally a better IB driver. Looks like my install and your install will be done around the same time. Lots of good reviews and pics next weekend-ish

The consensus (and I do it myself) is a 3X3 (so 3 drains/fills of 3 quarts) of Redline Racing. If you live in a cold climate some people will do one of the drains/fills with Lightweight racing.

I highly suggest the Redline Racing. I've got about 3,000 miles on it now with no issues and it feels great.

The flush is fine as long as they do the cooler line method where they pull a cooler line and start the engine and add fluid as the old fluid is being pumped out of the cooler line. Do not let them use a machine. "Racing" and "lightweight" are Type-F fluids as well as Amsoil Super Shift and B&M Trick Shift.

Looking forward to your install pics. Getting the regular X version was my own fault. I assumed there were only two versions, the Tempest and the Tempest X2. I thought people were just being lazy by listing it as the X and not X2. That's what I get for being a dumbass but it might work out better in the end. I found out that you can't damage this driver from over excursion. The motor runs out of juice before anything bottoms out. Pretty neat. I think it's somewhere around 43mm each way. In theory you could have 3" peak to peak excursion though it might not sound real clean. I'm just worried, my current setup just gets better and better sounding. I want the extra output of the Tempest for that small portion of the time I really want to crank it but I hope I'm not giving up SQ to get it. QTS and overall Q of the sub will be different. This one models very close to .7 installed. Right now the W6 models around .48 or something like.

Agreed, especially in his '04. It seems to make a bigger difference in the earlier TLs.

Alright, I'll call around and see if these shops that flush remove the cooler line when they flush. Isn't this actually a good way to remove almost all the old fluid and get like 99% new fluid?

While I'm at it...does this look correct? Looks waay to high right. This was after 10 minute drive, on level ground, with engine off. It's not black but its brown, and doesn't smell too burnt but does smell a little.

(tip is only black because of shadows...that's not fluid)

Has anyone been able to confirm this yet?

Did you order two 3rd gear switches or one 3rd gear and one 2nd gear switch. As I have been saying in the last few threads the service manual says there's only one 3rd gear switch not two but there is a 2nd gear switch to change. No one has confirmed this.

Paperboy take detailed pics when you do yours this way a type s thread can be made for us.

1- 28610-Ray-003
2- 90471-PW7-A00 (10mm Gaskets)

Is this correct? I'll be installing tonight or tomorrow, and doing the ATF change to Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle ATF (Full Synthetic). Wish me luck
Are these the same part numbers for a 06 TL?

also, how much do these typically run? I am at 92k and think I should go ahead and do mine soon.

i ordered 2 3rd gear and 1 4th gear.

i dont know why the service manual says that but here is a diagram:

you see how there's 2 #12 and 1 #13? #12 is the 3rd gear and #13 is the 4th gear.

but yes i will be taking pics when i install mine to clear up any confusion.

I own a 08 TL Base.. and feel a bit left out here!!! This DIY thread only shows 04-06 models and most 07-08 discussions are for type-S...
For Base 08, do we have 2x3rd gear switches and 1x4th gear switch? or 1x2nd, 1x3rd, and 1x4th?
