Just did this last weekend. Super easy. My only recommendation would be to buy like 6 bottles and keep flushing. Lots of gunk came out of mine. At $3 a bottle for the OEM stuff its worth it.

Have to say after reading this post several times i decided to tackle this myself. If my wasnt' in the shower at the time i needed her help i would have been done in about 30 mins. I went back to the post to ensure i was following directions several times, didn't want to screw anything up. I did notice a little smoke coming out of the drain tube when emptying the resevoir. It took several times of going lock to lock to get the air out and i still heard some whine. I took it for a quick spin and turn locked in my cul-de-sac both ways and no more whine. Many thanks for the pics and write up. Mine took exactly two 12 oz. bottles but will be checking every morning over the next couple of days to see if the level drops.

Wow, where'd you buy the fluid??? I came from my local honda dealer and it was just over $9.00 per bottle. The ATF was $6.50, planning on doing the 3x3 next.

While I was replacing PS fluid I accidently spilled PS fluid all over the engine part.
When I turn the car on it makes smoke from catalyst part and I tried to wipe out PS fluid but it seems like some fluid are still left there
Is it safte to drive this way? or What should I do to clean PS fluid?
Please help

Hose it down then spray it clean with some Brake Cleaner.

Thank you majofo I cleaned most of PS fluid and amount of smoke reduced but still some smokes are coming out from catalyst.
Will that be gone eventually or should I still do something about?
It looks pretty clean now though
It looks like I didn't get PS fluid on drive belt but I will replace it soon
Thank you everyone. =)

I remember doing this to my old sc300, and how I did it was different: I took off the return hose and ran it to a pan- then I had a buddy turn the wheel from lock to lock while I slowly added new fluid so the reservoir was never empty so no air ever entered the system. Once clean fluid started coming out of the return hose I put it back on and filled it to the correct level... Doesn't this sound like a much better way??? It was easy as hell and it got rid of the horrible noise coming from my ps pump... I think Im gonna do it to the TL like this today-- unless anyone has a good reason to not do it this way? Ill post up results

I know this has been beat to death but I just read it for the first time. This is one time I have to say screw the factory service manual. I would follow factory procedure with the exception of adding new fluid at the same rate as it's pumped out. It doesn't matter what the brand is, who makes it, or whatever. You're causing excessive wear running the pump dry. It's so easy to keep it full, why wouldn't you do it? I'm sure you can get away with running it dry but why would you?
I do a drain and fill of the reservior once a year to avoid ever having to do a flush.
As for the screen, I'm about to replace my resevior. The dealer installed 2 new racks and now there's quite a bit of metal caught in it. I tried to clean it for about an hour but no luck. Even used high pressure reverse flow and xylene but no luck.

Well I did it today and it didnt go exactly as I thought it would--
I had the bumper off already so I took off the lower hose near the cooler and drained it til it was below the upper return hose lever at the reservoir. Then I removed the return hose, capped it off at the reservoir so I could fill it, and I ran a hose from the return hose to a drain bucket. As soon as I started the engine it spewed out all the old fluid into the drain bucket, before I even had a chance to turn the wheel at all.
That was weird to me cause in my lexus it only pushed fluid out when the wheel was turning each way. Anyway, since I didnt get a chance to fill as it was draining the old fluid like I was planning, it got air in the system, a bunch of air. I filled it back up with clean fluid and started it again and turned the wheel lock to lock once, it was making some scary noises, I was scared I destroyed the pump. The fluid looked like the stuff on top of a cappuccino at that point so I let it settle for a while until the bubbles were gone.
I put the cap back on the reservoir and started it again, spun the wheel lock to lock a few times and it was fine- I filled it back to the max level and its all good now. Not much of a difference in turning feel, but the old fluid was really dirty- now its clean and its not making noise so I guess its good. From now on im just gonna drain and fill the reservoir every once in a while though, I was really worried when I heard the pump screaming cause of the air in it...

I did mine today. My PS res must have fallen off the bracket (before I bought it) and rubbed up against a belt burning a skid mark on the side. After washing her on Christmas eve i noticed that it was leaking. Went to the dealer ship in Denver and bought a new PS res. I also bought the PS fluid and the guy was nice of enough to give me 2extra bottles for FREE!!!! what i deal. Thanks to the DIY this was super easy. I wish i read about the O-ring replacement cause i wish i did that too. Ill prob end up doing another flush in a week or so and replacing the O-ring.

wow we might be getting into over kill here. got 400k on an accord
drain the reservoir once a year with a siphon hose. keep an eye on those steering tie rod boots. that's the p/s killer

I use a plastic turkey baster from Walmart and Honda fluid. I did use the Honda manual for our 2000 Accord and was tripping out because it sounded like something bad had happened and pops was looking at me with epic fail. It did get the junk out but I figured you could accomplish similar results by simply draining and refilling 3x (a 3x3 lol) with a short drive and full end to end turns in between drains. Hopefully that's good enough for another 20-30k miles.

I'm hoping someone can give me a quick answer because I'm in the middle of this and need some help.
I was trying to fill it with the new fluid as I drained the old but it was too quick for me and it drained some of the new fluid as well. Subsequently, I'm out of my 2 bottles of AMSOIL and it's a little bit below the minimum fill line.
What are my options? Would it be bad news to drive it? I can't get any AMSOIL Power Steering Fluid on short notice since I have to order it online.
I could borrow a car and go to a Honda dealer and get some Honda fluid. If I did that, is it ok to mix? Or should I drain the AMSOIL and go pure Honda fluid?

before you decide to drive it, have you turned your wheel lock to lock a few times. this pulls more fluid out of the reservoir and into the tubes. your car might be lower then you think.
if you can borrow a car, i would go to honda, buy 3 bottles. go back home. and drain the system completely before even opening the honda bottles. once you have pumped all the old oil out, THEN pour in the new honda oil.

I just did this on my wife's car. 6 yrs/79K mi. Had the hose recall done a year or so ago.
The old PS fluid STUNK. And was very dirty.
I used 2x12 oz Honda PS fluid.
I think I'll do this again a couple of oil changes from now. I know I didn't get everything but I figure that the new fluid will slowly pick up older dirt/sediment that settled in the system. I'm not going to rush out and do this again immediately to try and get all of the dirt out; I figure if I waited 6 yrs, waiting another year for another 2/3 flush won't hurt.
