08 Accord = RL in size!!

Just got Car & Dirver in the mail & it has an early test of the new Accord V6. It specs 1/2 inch longer then the RL with the same wheelbase & width. 0-60 under 6 seconds for the 6spd coupe

I wonder if that along with the big engine will impact TL & TL-S sales, any thoughts?

wow i hope that means that the tl will be as big as the rl too then and the rl will become bigger, because the tl has generally been based off of the accord platform

and i dont think it will affect tl sales ... cuz the tl is still wayyyy sexier than the accord ... haha ... but honestly it might take away sales from 08 models since the accord is new and the tl is old

yea i agree they are virtually the same in size .. i dont exactly see a TL and RL on the street and say that RL SURE IS HUGE or that TL is SMALLER then the RL ... 4 inches barely ... if you want to compare differences you would need a significantly larger vehicle like 5 series bmw to 7 series or a6 audi to a8

i think the reason they did that was because they made the RL the honda legend outside of the US.... and they needed some kind of basis for it.

It depends on how it's going to be priced. For the V6 models, I'm sure it will be within just a few thousand dollars of the TL's. The TL definately carries with it more luxury and prestige, so people will be willing to pay more for that. It's like the new Camry's with 260hp (I think?) vs. the IS250/350. Both of the Lexus' (Lexi?) are priced well-above the Camry, but people still buy the IS, because of the name and of course the luxury of the higher priced vehicle.

I don't think it will affect the TL sales too much.

BTW, I hope that they make an "L" version of the RL. (Like the 750iL, A8L, etc.). I really like the looks of the longer sedans. But that means they need a better powerplant than a measley V6 (which I think is the main reason why they keep it at the size that it's at now). V8 VTEC?

LOL... But that's make it RLL... don't sound too good IMO maybe a RLX... but then it'll sound too sporty... whatever it is, we can only anticipate and wait... but definetely need more power to compete with the other brand of cars... SH-AWD + hybrid won't hurt either....

The RL simply needs to be larger to be competitive. RLX brings to mind a certain watchmaker. Which would work, except that X these days means crossover.

Honda does have their sequence backwards with the Accord and TL. I think that introducing the Acura first, as with the MDX and Pilot, works better for them. Or they could do both at the same time, as Toyota/Lexus does with the Camry and ES.

What I meant was, make the RL as big as the "L" versions of the said vehicles, not name it RLL. But I'm sure you already knew that and were just busting my chops.

Anyway, I think the overall size is necessary to compete with the LS460L, 750iL, S600, etc. However, Honda does not have the powerplant necessary to come even close to the 380hp 4.6L V8 of Lexus, and much less the 510hp V12 of the S600. Unless they rig up a turbo version of the 3.5L V6, they need to start incorporating V8+'s.

-----------------------RL Sedan------------LS 460 L Luxury Sedan
Standard Engine--3.5L 290 hp V6-----4.6L 380 hp V8
Horsepower-------290 @ 6200 RPM---380 @ 6400 RPM
Torque (lb-ft)------256 @ 5000 RPM---367 @ 4100 RPM

The RL competes with the GS line, not the LS.
